Art Teacher P/T

Overview:The Art Teacher provides high-quality visual arts instruction to students by integrating the Hawaii Content & Performance Standards (HCPS III) with the rich, creative, and developmentally aligned Waldorf approach to art education. This position focuses on cultivating artistic skills, creativity, cultural appreciation, and hands-on craftsmanship through a balance of standards-based instruction and Waldorf-inspired artistic practices.

Key ResponsibilitiesStandards-Based Instruction

• Plan and deliver art lessons that align with the Hawaii State Standards for Fine Arts, ensuring students develop skills in:
• Artistic perception and observation
• Creative expression
• Cultural and historical understanding
• Aesthetic valuing
• Application of media, techniques, and tools
• Assess student progress using rubrics, performance tasks, and portfolio work aligned to state benchmarks.

Waldorf-Integrated Teaching

• Incorporate Waldorf art forms and methodology, including:
• Wet-on-wet watercolor painting
• Handwork such as knitting, weaving, felting, sewing, and simple fiber crafts
• Form drawing to support spatial awareness, coordination, and artistic flow
• Natural materials for sculpting, modeling (e.g., beeswax, clay), and crafting
• Seasonal and nature-based artistic projects that reflect the rhythms of the year
• Create a calm, invitational classroom environment that supports artistic exploration and imaginative thinking.

Curriculum Development & Cultural Integration

• Design developmentally appropriate and culturally responsive lessons that reflect:
• Hawaii’s rich local culture, stories, landscapes, and traditions
• The arts and crafts of diverse cultures, reinforcing global awareness
• Integrate Hawaiian values such as kuleana (responsibility), aloha (love and respect), and malama (stewardship)into the creative process.

Classroom Environment & Management

• Establish routines and expectations that ensure a safe, respectful, and creative working space.
• Guide students in the proper care of tools, materials, and communal art spaces.
• Use positive, student-centered strategies to promote focus, craftsmanship, and responsibility.

Collaboration & Communication

• Work collaboratively with grade-level teachers to ensure that art lessons complement classroom themes, units, and cultural studies.
• Communicate regularly with families about student progress, exhibitions, and upcoming projects.
• Assist with school-wide festivals, community events, and displays of student artwork.

Professional Responsibilities

• Maintain organized materials, supply inventories, and documentation of student work.
• Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, and curriculum reviews.
• Uphold school values and model respectful, nurturing interactions.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Art Education, Fine Arts, or a related field.
• Valid Hawaii teaching credential (or willingness to pursue).
• Experience with Waldorf education or interest in Waldorf methodology preferred.
• Strong classroom management skills and a passion for hands-on, creative teaching.

Pay: Up to $25,000.00 per year
