What are the responsibilities and job description for the Research Intern -Computational Genomics position at Komen Graduate Training Program UT MDACC?
We are seeking a Research Intern to support ongoing projects involving large-scale DNA and RNA sequencing, single-cell and spatial transcriptomics, and other molecular profiling data. Under close mentorship from the PI and lab members, the intern will assist with data processing, exploratory analysis, and pipeline development using Python/R and standard bioinformatics tools on Linux/HPC environments. This position is designed as a hands-on training opportunity in modern computational genomics within a highly collaborative cancer research team.
Wenyi Wang Lab in the Department of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology at MD Anderson Cancer Center develops and applies advanced computational and statistical methods to analyze high-dimensional genomic and multi-omics data, with a focus on cancer genomics and tumor evolution.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

- Gain hands-on experience analyzing real DNA/RNA, single-cell, or spatial transcriptomics data using Python/R in
- Learn the key steps of standard NGS pipelines, including basic QC, alignment, and expression or variant
- Develop reproducible research skills, including using scripts and version control to organize analyses.
- Strengthen scientific communication, by preparing simple figures/tables and briefly presenting results to the lab.
- Completion of a bachelor's or master's degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science,
- Basic programming skills in Python or R (coursework or projects are fine).
- Interest in cancer genomics/bioinformatics and willingness to learn new tools.
- Able to work in a collaborative team and commit to the agreed time for the internship.
- Familiarity with Linux/Unix or HPC environments
- Any prior experience with biological or sequencing data
