General Duties

Provides clinical expertise in patient care management and provides an appropriate teaching environment for fellows, residents, and students in the specialty of Geriatrics. The Assistant Professor must be fully ambulatory and have excellent bilateral manual dexterity, good hand-eye coordination, and visual and auditory acuity to perform the job functions. The Assistant Professor will be intelligent with outstanding analytical skills to make judgments regarding the patient's medical problems and advise the patient on methods to improve their care. Furthermore, the Assistant Professor must have emotional and psychological stability so that he will be able to manage patients and their families in a compassionate and positive manner.

The Assistant Professor will participate in the development of clinical research studies and will be independently responsible for new patient evaluations, initiation of appropriate referrals, and follow-up as appropriate. Clinical procedures practiced will encompass those pertinent in delivering standard care to the patient.

Education/Teaching

  • Provide a balanced and integrated educational program in internal medicine for oncology fellows, medical residents, and students who rotate through the Department of General Internal Medicine.
  • Attend and participate in Division/Department teaching and continuing education conferences, which require verbal interaction with colleagues and walking to meeting locations throughout the campus.
  • Provide talks to interdisciplinary teams, patients, and caregivers across the institution and nationally on onco-geriatrics topics.

Research

  • Actively engage in clinical research and scholarly activity to enhance the academic environment of the Department.
    • Develop programs of clinical research and scholarly activities in keeping with the goals of the Department. Requires the ability to synthesize a myriad of information pertaining to the area of research. May necessitate (orally or in writing) instructing research support personnel in protocol implementation.
    • Seek appropriate funding mechanisms to support clinical research. May require the completion of grant application forms through oral dictation or the use of a computer and keyboard. Will also will require budget development and analysis related to the clinical practice.
Clinical Practice

  • Practice clinical medicine in an exemplary manner in standards set forth by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners, and the American College of Physicians, properly balanced with other academic activities.
    • Must be capable of providing complete and thorough history and physical patient examinations. Must be able to perform invasive procedures as dictated by the physician's specialty. This may require standing, bending, stooping, lifting, hearing, manual dexterity, and clear and concise verbal communication.
    • Develop and maintain a clinical practice for patients referred to M.D. Anderson Cancer Center .
      • Provide physician staffing for the Department of General Internal Medicine at a level commensurate with that which would be provided by other geriatricians with the same level of training and experience.
      • Visually review for proper ICD-10 and CPT coding and approve all charge documents within 5 working days.
      • Complete patient documentation for medical records within time frames provided by institutional policy. Will require proficiency with electronic medical record use, the ability to dictate in a clear and concise manner, and visual review of documents.
      • Correspond as appropriate in writing or in telephone conversations with physicians regarding patient care and treatment.
      • Keep abreast of current approaches in the management of patients onco-geriatric patients through attendance at continuing education conferences. This will require listening and assimilating information from the conferences.
      • Request appropriate consultations for patients by phone conversations or in writing to other physicians.
      • Commitment to expanding MD Anderson's onco-geriatrics footprint to best meet the needs of older adults across the institution.
      • Willingness to take on a leadership role in the development of the geriatrics service, including leading quality improvement initiatives, program evaluation, and training of additional staff.
    • Provide a role model as a practitioner for faculty, fellows, residents, and students.
    • Provide peer review for assessing the clinical practice of faculty within the Department.
Administrative Duties

  • Faculty will participate in a range of departmental, divisional, and institutional initiatives that involve collaborations with internal and external stakeholders.
    • Enter and complete medical record documentation and compliance records
    • Participate in departmental Quality Improvement & Patient Safety programs, patient experience initiatives, HER system and charge capture and coding updates
    • Attend academic engagement and professional development events, (i.e. divisional grand rounds, departmental journal club, continued medical education (CME), departmental fellowship lectures, and department and section meetings).
Must be able to work within a context of very intense interpersonal relationships including other physicians, patients, and subordinates.

This position has a target base salary of $212,668 to $237,783 and is eligible for incentive compensation, comprehensive health, wellness, time off, savings, and retirement benefits, as well as relocation support, as applicable.

Required Qualifications

The Assistant Professor must have completed the M.D. degree in an accredited medical school, must have completed residency training in an approved American Residency Program, have made an application and been accepted by the American Board of Internal Medicine or the American Board of Family Medicine, and be licensed as a physician in the State of Texas. Must be board certified in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine and subspecialty of Geriatrics or obtain board certification within 3 years of employment.

Experience

Must have at least 2 years of experience as an Instructor or 5 years post degree with any combination of time as a clinician, clinical scientist or GME trainee (except specialties with shorter residencies for fellowships.
