Job Description

Construction Equipment Fleet Manager – Job Description

The Construction Equipment Fleet Manager oversees the full lifecycle and performance of the company's heavy and light construction equipment fleet—including excavators, dozers, loaders, cranes, MEWPs, forklifts, trucks, and trailers. This strategic role ensures the fleet is reliable, cost‑efficient, compliant, and fully aligned with operational and project needs. The Equipment Manager drives equipment availability, minimizes downtime, and leads the continuous improvement of maintenance practices, technology adoption, and fleet optimization across the organization.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Lead all fleet lifecycle decisions, including acquisition, rental vs. ownership analysis, major repairs and rebuilds, and disposal or replacement strategies based on total cost of ownership and long‑term value.
  • Track, analyze, and present key fleet performance metrics, such as availability, utilization, cost per hour, downtime, maintenance spend, and fuel efficiency to guide data‑driven decision‑making.
  • Direct preventive and predictive maintenance programs to maximize uptime, extend asset life, and reduce unplanned failures.
  • Supervise and develop mechanics, technicians, and support staff, including hiring, training, performance reviews, scheduling, and coaching.
  • Manage fleet budgets—including repair costs, parts, fuel, tires, rentals, and service agreements—with strong cost control and accountability practices.
  • Maintain accurate fleet records, including equipment history, inspection results, compliance documentation (DOT, OSHA, MSHA, emissions), and telematics/fleet management system data.
  • Collaborate with project managers, superintendents, and operations leaders to forecast, schedule, and fulfill equipment needs across active jobs.
  • Cultivate strong partnerships with dealers, rental companies, OEMs, and service vendors to ensure competitive pricing, reliable service, and timely support.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety, regulatory, and environmental requirements, leading incident reviews and implementing corrective actions when needed.
  • Champion innovation and continuous improvement, including technology adoption (telematics, CMMS systems, predictive maintenance tools) that demonstrably improve efficiency and reduce costs.

Qualifications

  • 7 years of progressive experience managing heavy construction equipment and other mobile equipment fleets. (civil, highway, mining, aggregates, large farming equipment, OTR equipment or large‑scale general contracting experience preferred).
  • Proven leadership ability overseeing maintenance teams in both shop and field environments.
  • Strong technical expertise in diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, undercarriage components, and advanced diagnostic/repair practices.
  • Experience with fleet management systems, telematics, and CMMS platforms, with ability to interpret data and drive action.
  • Demonstrated financial acumen managing multimillion‑dollar budgets and improving fleet cost performance.
  • Analytical, organized, and highly proficient with spreadsheets, data analysis, and performance trend evaluation.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Excellent communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence across departments.
