Small $5m non-profit organization seeking a Director of Human Resources

JOB SUMMARY

Kohl Children's Museum of Greater Chicago is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide experiences and memories to build a foundation for a lifetime of learning. Through our museum space in Glenview, IL, we offer engaging learning environments featuring interactive exhibits and programs that encourage young children to become effective learners through play. As part of our commitment to ensuring that every child has access to the best learning experiences possible, we extend our footprint throughout the Chicagoland area through outreach programs, traveling exhibits, and partnering with educators to inspire meaningful change in the education of young children.

Reporting to the President & CEO, the Director of Human Resources and Volunteer Services drives all HR functions, including employee relations, compensation, benefits, and recruitment. Additionally, the Director oversees the Museum’s volunteer program and strategy. This role is central to the operations of the Museum and is a highly visible role, working directly with the CEO, leadership team, and all employees in the organization.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Employee Relations:

  • Address, investigate, and resolve employee relations issues and concerns, collaborating with outside legal counsel as needed
  • Coach managers and directors on employee matters and organizational policies and practices as needed
  • Oversee employee programs supporting an ongoing positive work culture

Compliance:

  • Monitor and ensure the organization’s compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and recommended best practices; review and modify policies and practices to maintain compliance
  • Administer FMLA and other leave processes
  • Maintain all HR records, including reports, employee files and benefits documents

Talent Management:

Identify staffing and recruiting needs together with managers; develop and execute best practices for hiring and talent management overseeing recruitment for all open positions, including sourcing and screening candidates, administering background screens, and completing new hire onboarding process


Benefits Administration:

Oversee benefits and group insurance plans and perform full benefits administration, including managing open enrollment and maintaining vendor relationships and benefits orientations


Performance Management and Compensation Administration:

  • Administer and manage annual and mid-year performance review process
  • Collaborate with the CFO to review and administer annual merit increases

Training and Development:

Support Museum-wide training and development initiatives


Strategy and Analysis:

Conduct research and analysis of organizational trends including review of reports and metrics; maintain knowledge of trends, best practices, and new technologies in human resources, talent management, and employment law, and make recommendations, create policy, and collaborate on HR and organizational initiatives

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee and manage duties of the Volunteer Coordinator and Human Resources Coordinator
  • Develop and implement departmental budget
  • Manage and support employee related activities including organizational surveys, quarterly all staff meetings, monthly employee activities, and quarterly new hire orientations
  • Utilize HRIS database (ADP) to manage employee information, create reports and support payroll processing
  • Lead and participate in various Museum committees/teams to support the overall mission of the Museum especially Inclusion and Employee Engagement Teams
  • Serve as a backup to payroll processing, as needed


THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL POSSESS THE FOLLOWING:

  • Undergraduate degree in Human Resources or a related field
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of progressive, broad-based HR experience, preferably a Director role in a professional environment
  • Supervisory experience, and experience working with all levels of staff
  • SHRM or HRCI certification, a plus
  • Experience working with or for a nonprofit organization preferred
  • Experience with various office technology and HRIS database systems
  • Strong knowledge of federal and state labor laws
  • Commitment to managing sensitive and confidential information with integrity
  • Dependability, flexibility and strong problem-solving skills
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to draw conclusions from data, assess implications and make recommendations
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with an eye for attention to detail
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills with the ability to work well with all levels of staff
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong customer service orientation
  • Flexibility with work schedule, as necessary, to support weekend scheduling and/or evening activities skills

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Valid driver’s license, own vehicle, and good driving record

WORKING CONDITIONS

Customary office-related activities: standing, walking, sitting, bending

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Moderate lifting (up to 15 pounds)

Salary : $93,395 - $110,000
