What are the responsibilities and job description for the Sport Fishing Captain position at Kodiak Island Resort LLC?
Hiring guides for summer 2024, season ramps up May 15 and continues through September 15. Kodiak Island Resort located in Larsen Bay, Alaska.

Schedule:
- Trips usually last about 8 hours
- Guides need to be at the dock an hour before their trip and usually spend an hour at the end of their trip cleaning up the boat
- Filet all fish and ready for vacuum packing
- Up to 7 days a week
Compensation:
- Salary/Bonus/Tips DOE ($10,000.00 plus per month)
- Season year end bonus for working entire season
- Tips can never be guaranteed, but are often a significant part of earnings
Requirements:
- Captain’s License (MMC), either OUPV (6 pack) or Masters
- First Aid/CPR certification
- Pre-employment drug screen
- Alaska Sport Fishing License
- Alaska Sport Fishing Guide License
Outcomes
- Makes safety the highest priority on excursions. Conducts pre-trip inspections of any vessel to be operated, gives a safety briefing before every trip, ensures required safety equipment is always functional and aboard, and maintains a high degree of vigilance at all times.
- Exceeds guest expectations whenever possible, putting thoughtful effort and care into all guest interactions. Greets guests warmly, supporting them throughout the trip.
- Seeks to improve fishing skills, seeks out new fishing spots and experiments with gear in order to bring the best possible chance of catching to each group of guests
- Communicates clearly with guests, teaching them the basics of fishing in Alaska and delivering narrative on the history and ecosystem
- Guides typically are expected to fix maintenance problems on their own, must communicate them as they’re recognized
- Owns mistakes, accepts constructive feedback, and uses it to improve throughout the season
- Pays close attention to details; safety; equipment; communications; timing/schedules; paperwork/logbook; and many others
- Works well as part of the guide team; checks in with other guides about the plan for the day; respects the ideas and suggestions of other guides; takes time when possible to lend a hand to assist coworkers.
- Days not fishing will maintain boat and gear along with helping maintaining lodge grounds
Physical/Environmental Aspects:
- Must be able to lift and carry up 40 lbs.
- Operating boats in the summer means exposure to rain, cold winds, sea spray, and temperatures ranging from the high 40s to the mid-70s
- Must be able to endure impacts as boat hulls bounce in the chop
- Position requires frequent standing, walking, grasping, carrying, and balancing
