Purpose of Job
The purpose of this classification is to assist the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the Tennessee Department of Health in implementing disease prevention, health promotion, and vaccine outreach. Translates and interprets written and spoken communications between Spanish and English languages for effective cross-cultural communication.
Essential Functions
- Perform routine office duties daily, including but not limited to greeting walk-in clients, answering phones, completing requests/immunization record transfers in and out of state; data entry and scanning paperwork; managing Immunization Program group emails/requests.
- Provide professional interpretation services for Limited English Proficiency (LEP) clients in the Knox County Health Department (KCHD) and in community settings, specifically for Spanish-speaking clients.
- Facilitate written and spoken communication between clients and providers, rendering all information clearly and accurately from the source language into the target language.
- Promote and provide educational opportunities for healthcare providers and the public.
- Work with local providers and other healthcare partners to ensure accurate vaccine administration and to help improve vaccine rates in Knox County.
- Assess students for compliance with state and local school vaccination requirements to ensure individuals in childcare and school settings are protected against vaccine preventable diseases.
- Collaborate to create, develop, and implement outreach initiatives to increase vaccine uptake for all ages in Knox County communities.
- Support immunization information needs of the Immunization Program through quality data and reports (annual 24-month surveys and monthly vaccine reports).
- Support regional health department prevention of vaccine-preventable disease cases or outbreaks.
- Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in the field by completing regular continuing education courses and other professional development opportunities as needed.
Minimum Training & Qualifications
- Education: Associate's Degree
- Certifications (Required By Hire): Certified Medical Interpreter through National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI) or Certified Healthcare Interpreter through Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters
- Certifications (Required After Hire): None
- Experience: 2 years of previous related experience in Spanish language translation and interpretation
- Preferences: None
- Other Requirements: Must possess and maintain a valid TN State Driver's License; must have reliable transportation and maintain automobile liability insurance that meets Tennessee’s financial responsibility law on personal automobile.
