LABORER 1
Purpose of Job
The purpose of this classification is to perform general maintenance and repair work.
This is a safety sensitive position that requires a drug screen.
Essential Functions
The Laborer 1 is responsible for the following essential functions:
- Provides support to County highway workers, including craftsmen, operators, etc., by performing physical labor and operating light motor equipment.
- Removes debris, trash, and dirt from highways, grounds, pipes, ditches, and other structures/areas.
- Trims and cuts trees, and rakes leaves using weed trimmer and other equipment as necessary.
- Assists in constructing and paving roads to include shoveling asphalt, road patching/maintenance, and other related tasks.
- Assists in the removal of snow from roadways.
- Assists in building catch basins and installs drainpipes according to specifications.
- Assists drivers in servicing equipment.
- Directs traffic around job sites as required.
Additional Job Functions
- Respond to and report immediately if called upon by local, regional, or central office supervisors, as part of a coordinated emergency response by the Knox County Mayor’s Office
- Perform other duties as required
Minimum Training & Qualifications
- High School Diploma, or GED; with six (6) months experience in construction or related work; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position.

Physical Requirements
- Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for active work. Ability to bend, kneel, squat, stand for extended periods of time, working outdoors in various types of weather conditions.
Occupational Hazards
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors, cold and hot weather conditions including precipitation
- Exposure to sunlight for extended periods of time
- Exposure to vehicular traffic traveling at high speeds
