Associate Dean for Global Engagement and Intercultural Student Life


Purpose: 

Reporting to the VP of Student Development, the Associate Dean for Global Engagement and Intercultural Student Life develops and directs the implementation of programs to retain and support international students, from their transition as incoming students, through their time on campus, and continuing on through any authorized postgraduate training programs.

Summary of the position:

Ensures that the college adheres to obligations and regulations related to participation in the Student and Exchange Visitor Program and acts as the Principal Designated School Official (PDSO) and provides leadership for programs and services that support international students, foster intercultural learning, and strengthen campus-wide student engagement.

This supervisory/managerial position advances student belonging and persistence in the strategic development and implementation of campus wide engagement initiatives, supporting multicultural and international student organizations advisors, and developing programs that promote inclusive community development within a residential liberal arts environment.

The Associate Dean contributes to student support efforts across the student lifecycle and participates in campus duty rotation and responds to student needs and emergencies.

Key Responsibilities: 

International Student Support & Global Engagement

  1. Serves as the Primary Designated School Official for the institution. Responsible for I-17 updates, institutional recertification, adding and removing DSOs. 
  1. Serves as the Principal Designated School Official for students on F visas and a responsible officer for those on other visas, and advises students on issues related to visa regulations and maintenance of their visa status:
  1. Maintains immigration records in the federal Student Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). Monitors federal regulations and establishes institutional practices to ensure compliance, provide training for College staff with SEVIS responsibilities, and ensure that the College completes all requirements to retain certification of eligibility to enroll international students. 
  2. Assists students with issues related to employment, including attainment of Social Security Numbers, Employment Authorization Documents (EAD), Curricular Practical Training (CPT), and Optional Practical Training (OPT).
  1. Supervises the international student service coordinator in the development, transition and adjustment support initiatives for international students, including orientation, ongoing programming, and resource navigation.
  1. Serve as a campus liaison regarding international student needs and collaborate with academic, residential, and career development offices to enhance student success.

Intercultural Programming & Belonging Initiatives

  1. Develop and implement campus-wide programs that promote intercultural learning, identity development, and inclusive community engagement.
  1. Advise multicultural student organizations and support collaborative programming across cultural and affinity groups.
  2. Partner with faculty and campus partners to integrate co-curricular learning experiences that enhance cultural awareness and global citizenship.

Student Engagement & Leadership Development

  1. Provide leadership for student engagement initiatives that encourage involvement, leadership growth, and community participation.
  2. Support training and development of student leaders, including peer educators, orientation leaders, and residential student staff.
  3. Assist in planning large-scale campus events and engagement opportunities that contribute to a vibrant residential campus experience.

Residential Community Support & Duty Rotation

  1. Serve as a resource for residential students experiencing developmental, interpersonal, or community concerns.
  2. Participate in a campus-wide professional staff duty rotation, responding to after-hours student incidents and emergencies.
  3. Collaborate with residential life staff to support community-building initiatives and student well-being efforts.

Program Administration & Collaboration

  1. Manage logistics, communication, and implementation of assigned programs and initiatives.
  2. Maintain records related to student organization advising, program participation, and engagement efforts.
  3. Serve on divisional committees and contribute to collaborative planning across student development functional areas.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Master’s degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Intercultural Studies, Counseling, or related field.
  • Must meet eligibility requirements to be a Designated School Official (DSO) as determined by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security by being either a citizen or a lawful permanent resident of the United States.
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of professional experience in student affairs, international student support, multicultural affairs, or student engagement.
  • Demonstrated experience advising student organizations or coordinating campus programs.
  • Strong intercultural communication skills and ability to support students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Willingness to work evenings, weekends, and participate in on-call duty rotation.

Minimum Education Required:  

  • Master’s degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Intercultural Studies, Counseling, or related field.

Minimum Experience Required: 

  • Minimum of 3–5 years of professional experience in student affairs, international student support, multicultural affairs, or student engagement.



Minimum Licenses/Certifications Required: 

  • Must meet eligibility requirements to be a Designated School Official (DSO) as determined by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security by being either a citizen or a lawful permanent resident of the United States.
  • A valid driver’s license

Additional Qualifications: (Preferred qualifications) 

  • 3-5 years of experience in international admission, retention, and/or student services.
  • Experience supporting international student transition or intercultural programming initiatives.
  • Familiarity with federal regulations related to international student status or collaboration with compliance staff.
  • Experience in residential liberal arts college environments.
  • Ability to design leadership development experiences for student populations.
  • Experience with the Student Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) system and strong understanding of federal regulations and procedures with regard to F and J student visas and immigration. 
  •  A valid passport
  • Hours can be long, varied, and the need for support of students may dictate, especially but not limited to the academic year. 
  • This position entails working evenings and weekends a minimum of 15-20% of the time.


Summary Pay Range: Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance, and experience. Please note that pay is only one component of total compensation.
