HSES Env. Specialist Air & Chemical

SUMMARY: The Health, Safety, Environmental, & Security (HSES) Environmental Specialist will have responsibility for ensuring that our employees, contractors, and visitors enjoy high levels of safety, health and environmental protection while maintaining regulatory and corporate compliance.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.  

Successful candidate will perform a wide range of HSES related assignments, with assistance from the HSES Manager, including but not limited to the descriptions below: 

ENVIRONMENTAL:

• Manage monitoring and reporting requirements for environmental regulations and support site environmental programs including but not limited to:

• SARA Title III Hazardous Chemical Inventory
• Chemical Bulk Storage & Spill Prevention & Response
• Petroleum Storage & SPCC Plan
• Title V air permit compliance
• Toxic Release Inventory (TRI)
• Provide support for the ENVIRONMENTAL SPECIALIST – WATER COMPLIANCE AND WASTE MANAGEMENT.
• Provide a liaison between the wastewater treatment plant operators and plant departments
• Support WWTP operator’s issues and concerns by brokering resolutions using other facility resources
• Understand and manage the environmental compliance needs pertaining to air compliance and chemical management of the facility.
• Maintain the facility’s regulatory permit compliance requirements pertaining to air compliance and chemical management of the facility.
• Responsible for developing Safety Data Sheets for company products

HEALTH:

• Assist in compliance of employee health policies including injury management, accident investigations to determine root cause of incidents, and application of corrective action plans 
• Maintain the site’s hazardous chemical safety data sheets library and system

SAFETY: 

• Assist with promoting & driving the corporate safety program, “All in for Safety” to build the site vision of a Zero incident culture, including but not limited to conducting employee safety observations, and other employee engagement activities on the shop floor
• Participate in conducting new employee safety orientations, routine safety training and tool box talks
• Participate in the site Management of Change process

SECURITY/OTHER:

• Assist plant with government interfaces and inspections
• Participate on capital and other project teams to identify and resolve regulatory issues, analyze process and property hazards, and establish protective measures to mitigate risks to a tolerable level
• Using internal and external resources; provide guidance to site management for implementation of programs or controls to comply with HSES requirements
• Support all other site HSES objectives and initiatives as directed by the HSES Environmental Coordinator
• Ensure the identification and sharing of best practices across departments

 QUALITY:

Supports, maintains and continually improves Knowlton Technologies, LLC Quality Management System in accordance with requirements of the IATF 16949 International Standard.  Employee has the role and responsibility to follow the work instructions and Current Best Practices that support the KT Value Stream Maps.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

• Four-year degree in Environmental Management or related field, preferred.
• Three- to five- years of experience in one or more of the following is preferred:
  1. Broad-based environmental consulting
  2. Industrial environmental compliance
  3. Environmental program management
  4. Wastewater treatment systems and technologies (preferred)

SKILLS

• Strong computer skills with familiarity with the Microsoft Office suite of products.
• Mechanical aptitude is desired.
• Good interpersonal and communication skills required.
• Project or program management is a plus.
• Strong technical/ analytical skills, the ability to handle multiple tasks and responsibilities and the ability to work in a cooperative, team-oriented atmosphere
• Strong initiative, focus and follow-through skills
• Effective organization and planning skills

LANGUAGE SKILLS:        

Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conforms to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups and/or boards of directors.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.  Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls and talk or hear.  The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, and reach with hands and arms.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Since the facility is located on multiple levels, the employee must possess the ability to climb stairs on a routine basis.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, chemical vapors and airborne particles.  The noise level in the work environment ranges from office conditions to 95 dB in certain areas of the factory.
