Manual Machinist

Position Summary

The Manual Machinist operates a variety of conventional (non-CNC) machine tools to fabricate, modify, and repair mechanical components used in the repair and servicing of industrial equipment. This position requires strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and a commitment to quality and safety.

Essential Responsibilities

• Record measurements, dimensions, sketches, and production data to meet service and design specifications.
• Use precision measuring instruments to verify dimensions and tolerances.
• Set up and operate conventional machine tools, including engine lathes, horizontal and vertical mills, horizontal boring mills, drills, and tapping equipment.
• Perform machining operations such as drilling, tapping, boring, turning, milling, and tool-post grinding.
• Balance mechanical assemblies using dynamic balancing equipment.
• Perform metalizing (metal spraying) operations as required.
• Understand material properties and select appropriate machining and repair methods.
• Perform welding using MIG, TIG, stick, and oxy-fuel (torch) processes.
• Complete broaching and babbitt bearing work as needed.
• Operate a variety of hand and power tools, including band saws, belt sanders, grinders, and files.
• Safely lift, position, secure, and adjust heavy components during machining and repair operations.
• Follow all company safety policies and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
• Assist other machinists and service center personnel as needed.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Service Center Manager or Supervisor.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• Previous manual machining experience preferred.
• Training through a trade school, vocational/technical program, military service, or equivalent on-the-job machine shop experience is a plus.

Physical Requirements

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to:

• Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
• Regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
• Occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds with appropriate assistance or equipment.
• Stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, climb, balance, and reach throughout the workday.
• Use hands for handling tools, equipment, and components requiring manual dexterity.
• Possess adequate vision (close, distance, peripheral, and depth perception), with or without corrective lenses.
• Communicate effectively by speaking and hearing in a manufacturing environment.
