What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Electrical Engineer position at Knightscope?
About Knightscope
Knightscope is a security technology company building the nation’s first Autonomous Security Force. The Company combines autonomous machines, advanced software, and human expertise to help protect people, property, and critical infrastructure. Knightscope’s long-term mission is to make the United States of America the safest country in the world
Job Summary
Knightscope is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to join our product development team and own electrical design across our hardware programs. In this role, you will lead electrical system design, subsystem development, component integration, battery selection, and wire harnessing across multiple hardware programs—from early prototyping through production readiness. You will work cross-functionally with mechanical, software, and systems engineers in a fast-paced, gate-driven product development environment and play a critical role in shaping our hardware products. This is a self-directed role; assignments may span multiple programs and platforms as priorities evolve.
About the Role
The role is an ownership-driven position within a multidisciplinary program team, requiring a senior, hands-on engineer who is comfortable operating in ambiguity, working independently with minimal direction, getting dirty and driving decisions across mechanical, electrical, and software boundaries. You will be expected to make thoughtful tradeoffs and carry designs from early concept and prototyping through to production.
This individual will own the full electrical scope of our hardware products, including CPU, GPU, and compute-module evaluation, power distribution, battery selection, working knowledge of video, audio, and router systems, thermal management and testing support. The current priority is a body-worn / wearable platform, but this person should expect to contribute to other hardware programs over time.
Please include the Disney character that best describes you in your resume—and make sure to ask your interviewers the same. They are expecting it.
Key Responsibilities
- Drive electrical design and integration across one or more hardware programs, through all phases of product development.
- Evaluate and integrate electrical components, sensors, and compute modules across a range of product form factors.
- Evaluate CPU and GPU performance against video system requirements, and contribute to compute-module architecture.
- Define power requirements and design a harness system to ensure efficient power distribution.
- Assess and select batteries based on reliability, safety, and product-specific constraints (including wearability where applicable).
- Troubleshoot and debug at the system, PCB, and component levels.
- Collaborate closely with mechanical, software, and systems engineering teams to resolve cross-functional tradeoffs.
- Support development of test plans, fixtures, and validation activities to ensure product performance and reliability.
- Work with external partners and vendors as needed to support design and manufacturing.
- Contribute to establishing scalable product development processes and best practices
Required Qualifications
- B.S. or M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
- 8 years of experience in product development, with demonstrated independent ownership of electromechanical hardware programs from concept through production.
- Experience taking at least one hardware product from concept through production with minimal supervision.
- Experience across multiple product form factors or programs; soft goods, wearables, or body-worn experience a plus.
- Experience with PCB design including schematic capture, layout, fabrication and assembly oversight, board bring-up, and DVT.
- Experience designing electrical systems that integrate compute modules, sensors, routers, and batteries.
- Familiarity with thermal design and management in compact, sealed enclosures.
- Hands-on prototyping experience; must be comfortable working in a fast-paced, early-stage program environment with ambiguous and incomplete requirements and aggressive milestones.
- Strong cross-functional communication skills; ability to work effectively with mechanical, software, and systems engineering teams.
- Proven ability to work independently -- set direction, make decisions, and drive to closure without close oversight.
