The Apparel Designer determines style, material, and color directions based on input from the customer, merchandising, sales, marketing, development and sourcing staff. Keeps abreast of fashion trends and consumer needs, and supports the integrity of the lines/brands and the goals of the company. Produces design sketches and makes seasonal presentations of product designs. Reviews all styles for construction, silhouette, fit and trim details, and approves quality of factory samples. 3 year’s experience in a Lifestyle brand, preferably a brand with heavy direct to consumer presence.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Responsible for the cohesiveness of assigned product categories.
- Design a given number of products per season as well as managing carry- overs for assigned collections.
- Attend trade shows, research global markets review industry publications to stay current with market trends and identify new fabrics and techniques.
- Administers a pro-active role through entire product design process: research, design concept presentation, illustrations, fit and fabric/trim/print direction, development of specification pack, critique of sales samples.
- Maintain an in depth understanding of customer.
- Gather customer insight on existing products and future designs and concepts.
- Meet all time lines.
- Keen ability to follow a product brief and design to a specific target FOB. Mentor team to accomplish the same task.
- Capacity to imagine, capture and express a brand’s essence through unique product concepts, design and styling.
- Research global markets to identify new trends, fabrics, techniques, color stories, etc.
- Ensures that the product is consistent with market trends as well as business strategy.
- Assists with fit sessions in office and in factory and work with Tech Designer to deliver the garment fit as briefed by the Product Line Manager.
- Drive value-engineering through design process: consolidation of fabrics, zippers, trims.
- Works closely with fabric manager to select innovative and commercial fabrics. Helps drive future fabric developments for assigned categories.
- Collaborates with sourcing, factories, suppliers and other team members to achieve 'state of the art' opportunities for product innovation.
- Ensure technical packages are 100% accurate and complete. Train and mentor team to achieve 100% accuracy objective.
- Creates on-strategy product designs within set timelines for multiple seasons.
- Partners with Sourcing to drive supply chain efficiency.
- Visit textile shows to keep up-to-date on the latest fabrics.
- Assist in setting and follows creative standards established by Management.
- Supply accurate/complete Design Packs to the Product Development on schedule.
- Work with the product development team to review strike offs and counter samples and make recommendations for corrections.
- Performs other duties as required/assigned by manager.
- Travel as necessary to facilitate the development and sampling process.
- Performs duties consistent with the company’s AAP/EEO goals and policies.
Education & Experience
- BA in Apparel Design or related field of study preferred.
- 3 years of professional experience in technical apparel.
- Understanding of the history and direction of market trends.
- In depth understanding of fit and patterning.
- Understanding of technical fabrics.
- Strong eye for color and ability to identify current and future color trends.
- Advanced knowledge of Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign.
- Strong illustration skills- possess the ability of communicating a concept thru sketching free hand as well as on the computer.
- Thorough knowledge of printing techniques and understanding of how graphics will translate onto a printable garment.
- Ability to identify unseen problems and come up with appropriate solutions.
- Ability to work with multiple personalities in a diverse, fast paced environment to create a team atmosphere.
- Must have exceptional ability to manage time professionally and execute ideas from initial concept to completion.
- Ability to work under pressure to meet strict deadlines.
- Exceptional knowledge of the actions sports and athletic apparel industry.
- Exceptional knowledge of the apparel industry.
- Strong Verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to take concepts from ideation to production.
