Basic Job Purpose/Function

Senior Traffic Engineering Technician- Public Works - Goldendale, WA - Full Time - Non-Exempt , Salary set by Union, Step 1, $28.98/Hr. - First review 1/2/2026 - Open until filled.

Independently performs semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the construction, installation, maintenance and repair of signs, traffic control devices and pavement markings on the County road system, in accordance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (M.U.T.C.D.). May lead crew of other Technicians as needed. Provides traffic engineering support assignments both in the field and in the office. Work would include project development with emphasis on signs, markings, traffic safety and traffic control.

Essential Job Duties

  • Installs new traffic and road signs and maintains, repairs or replaces existing signs, ensuring correct placement, size, height, colors, etc. in accordance with State sign manual and the MUTCD or other directions.
  • Conducts periodic inspections, by day and by night, of traffic signs, checking for damaged or defaced signs, leaning or broken posts, reflectivity, proper location and condition. Removes damaged, rusty and dirty signs and repairs. Makes reports of status and takes action to correct deficiencies.
  • Fabricates signs including custom road signs for road names and other specific needs as assigned.
  • Maintains and updates inventory and records of signs, sign materials, paints and tools, chemicals, and other supplies necessary for performing work assignments. Prepares purchase orders as necessary to maintain appropriate inventory level. Receives, inspects and stores goods, verifying compliance with purchase specifications.
  • Prepares and maintains logs, reports and records of daily activities, sign locations, inspections, and other information related to area of assignment.
  • Keeps brush, trees and other objects clear of traffic signs.
  • Operates a variety of equipment used in the installation, repair, painting, and removal of street signs and markings, such as jackhammer, saws, die cutter, air compressor, hand tools, and spray guns.
  • Provides advice and assistance to road supervisor and crew members on proper flagging and signing operations.
  • Remains current on new standards and regulations applicable to area of assignment by attending seminars, reading, and participating in study courses. Updates manual and makes any necessary changes in existing signing/traffic control devices.
  • Inspects pavement markings for adherence to proper standards for placement and application.
  • Responds to inquiries, complaints, and requests for service from the public regarding traffic safety, traffic control, providing information and/or service within scope of knowledge and authority.
  • Conducts research on a variety of traffic engineering and traffic safety issues for the engineer.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements/Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge of requirements, principles, practices and techniques of traffic control, traffic safety systems and signing. Read, interpret, and apply manuals, codes, plans, maps, and work orders applicable to area of assignment. Accurately perform mathematical calculations applicable to work assignments. Knowledge and experience with maintaining an inventory, maintenance logs, reports and records. Care, maintenance and use of assigned equipment. County road system, road logs, and road numbering system. Hazards and safety precautions involved in the performance of assigned tasks. Ability to operate equipment and tools used in area of assignment. Prioritize and organize work assignments and carry out work independently.. Respond to public inquiries, complaints, emergencies in an accurate, polite and responsive manner. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public. Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Physically perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the applicant with the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform this job. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
  • High school diploma, or G.E.D., and three years experience in sign maintenance, traffic control, traffic safety, traffic engineering or other related work. Satisfactory completion of continuing education workshops and specialized training will be required.

Licenses, Certificates And Other Requirements

  • Valid Washington State driver's license
  • Ability to use and familiarity with computers and wireless devices and related spreadsheet, database, and word processing software.
