Job Summary

A foreman for directional drilling is responsible for overseeing and coordinating all aspects of directional drilling operations on-site, ensuring they are conducted safely, efficiently, and in compliance with project plans and regulations

Key Responsibilities

Oversee daily operations: Manage the execution of directional drilling activities, ensuring they follow the planned trajectory and meet technical specifications

Supervise crews: Lead and coordinate teams of directional drilling operators and support personnel, maintaining high safety and quality standards

Coordinate with stakeholders: Work closely with management, utility locators, traffic control teams, maintenance staff, and other departments to ensure smooth project execution

Operate or monitor equipment: May operate or supervise drilling rigs, rock/air hammers, and other specialized equipment, ensuring they are in proper working condition

Troubleshoot issues: Identify and resolve operational problems on-site to minimize downtime

Maintain records: Keep accurate documentation of drilling progress, equipment maintenance, and personnel activities

Enforce safety and compliance: Conduct pre-job safety meetings, ensure all personnel are trained, and adhere to environmental, safety, and regulatory guidelines

Communicate with clients and management: Provide updates on job status, issues, and progress to management

Skills and Qualifications

Technical expertise: In-depth knowledge of directional drilling techniques, tools, and equipment

Leadership: Ability to lead a crew in a fast-paced, often remote environment

Problem-solving: Strong troubleshooting and decision-making skills in challenging conditions

Regulatory knowledge: Familiarity with safety procedures, environmental regulations, and industry standards

Physical fitness: Ability to work long hours, in remote locations, and under varying weather conditions

Requirements

  • Proven experience in heavy civil or pipeline construction management with a focus on directional drilling projects.
  • Strong knowledge of construction safety management practices including OSHA standards and federal safety regulations.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage teams in a fast-paced construction environment with excellent crew management skills.
  • Proficiency in construction management software such as ProCore, Bluebeam, Primavera P6, Primavera P3e or HeavyBid for scheduling and project tracking.
  • Skilled in interpreting technical drawings, blueprints, and technical specifications related to pipeline installation projects.
  • Experience supervising construction schedules from planning through execution; familiarity with managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent managerial communication skills with a focus on team leadership and client relations.
  • Ability to perform site inspections using tools like ohmmeters; understanding of electrical systems related to pipeline projects is a plus.
  • Construction site experience with a strong emphasis on quality control and safety compliance in commercial or infrastructure projects.
  • Relevant certifications such as OSHA training certifications; heavy equipment operation certifications are advantageous.
