Farm Service Technician - Job Description

Position Overview: The Farm Service Technician is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining a wide variety of vehicles and equipment used in agricultural operations. The role requires a solid understanding of both mechanical and electrical systems, attention to detail, and the ability to provide excellent customer service. This position involves performing regular inspections, preventive maintenance, and emergency repairs to ensure the functionality and reliability of farm vehicles and equipment.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Diagnosing, Repairing, and Rebuilding:

    • Perform repairs on company vehicles and equipment, including both mechanical and electrical components.

    • Diagnose issues and rebuild or replace parts to restore functionality to machinery.

    • Conduct thorough inspections to identify maintenance needs and repair issues.

  2. Preventive Maintenance:

    • Carry out routine preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment to extend their lifespan and prevent downtime.

    • Utilize knowledge of maintenance tools and equipment to ensure the proper functioning of all machinery.

    • Perform scheduled inspections and take corrective action as necessary to keep equipment in optimal working condition.

  3. Customer Service and Communication:

    • Maintain a positive attitude when interacting with customers and colleagues, fostering strong relationships.

    • Consult with customers to understand their needs and read work orders to determine the scope of repair tasks.

    • Communicate effectively with the Manager regarding operational issues, customer concerns, and any potential disruptions.

  4. Work Schedule and Organization:

    • Complete all assigned tasks within the established timeframe, ensuring quality and accuracy.

    • Demonstrate reliable attendance, scheduling time off with advance notice.

    • Create detailed work plans after thoroughly assessing the issues with vehicles and equipment.

  5. Inventory Management:

    • Maintain and organize the inventory of tools and equipment, ensuring all necessary items are readily available.

    • Order filters and parts before performing full services, ensuring proper maintenance schedules are followed.

  6. Safety and Cleanliness:

    • Adhere to safety guidelines and company policies, ensuring a safe work environment for yourself and others.

    • Wear the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures when working with hazardous energy sources (hydraulic, pneumatic, or gravitational).

    • Keep both inside and outside work areas organized and tidy, ensuring tools and parts are stored properly when not in use.

  7. DOT Inspections:

    • Ensure that all company vehicles and equipment pass Department of Transportation (DOT) inspections after repair work is completed.

  8. Use of Technology:

    • Utilize basic knowledge of computer systems and relevant electronics for diagnostics, record-keeping, and work order management.

Qualifications:

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Technical or vocational training in automotive or agricultural machinery repair is a plus.

  • Experience: Previous experience in vehicle and equipment maintenance, with a focus on agricultural machinery, preferred.

  • Skills:

    • Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills.

    • Proficiency in the use of hand and power tools.

    • Ability to read and understand technical documents and work orders.

    • Knowledge of safety practices and protocols in a workshop environment.

    • Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.

Work Conditions:

  • This position may require working in various environmental conditions, both indoors and outdoors.

  • Ability to lift heavy objects and work in physically demanding situations.

  • Must be available for emergency repairs as needed.
