The Dental Assistant supports the dentist in delivering quality oral healthcare by preparing treatment rooms, sterilizing instruments, assisting during dental procedures, and ensuring patient comfort and safety. This role also includes administrative and clinical responsibilities that contribute to the smooth operation of the practice. An ideal candidate is personable, detail oriented, and can anticipate the needs of the dentist and the office.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Support
- Prepare and maintain dental instruments, equipment, and treatment rooms for patient care.
- Assist the dentist during examinations and procedures, including suctioning, passing instruments, managing materials, and anticipating the needs of the dentist.
- Take dental radiographs and intraoral photos as directed.
- Mix dental materials such as cements, impression materials, and other restorative materials.
- Ensure all instruments are properly sterilized and infection control protocols are strictly followed.
- Maintain complete and detailed patient records through accurate procedure posting and clinical chart notes in the practice management system.
- Provide pre- and post-operative instructions to patients as directed by the dentist.
Patient Care
- Welcome and prepare patients for treatment in a comforting and reassuring way.
- Review health histories and update patient information in the practice management software as needed.
- Assist patients with scheduling follow-up appointments and oral hygiene education.
- Ensure that referral information is communicated to the patient and administrative team.
Administrative Support
- Schedule appointments and manage patient flow efficiently.
- Record treatment information in patient charts and electronic health records.
- Handle lab cases, including sending prescriptions, keeping accurate records of cases in process at the lab, and ensuring each case is received by calling the lab when necessary.
