What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director of Student Life position at KIRK DAY SCHOOL?
Qualifications:
- A profession of faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior
- A member of a Bible-teaching Christian church and affirmation of the Westminster Confession of Faith.
- Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education, Master’s degree preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years teaching experience and demonstrated leadership role in an educational setting, preferably in a Christian school.
Reports to: Head of School
Co-Leads with: Director of Academics and Director of Admissions to ensure the effectiveness of the school’s academic program and consistency of culture and educational experience.
Supervises: After Care Coordinator and Athletic Coordinator (by ensuring each are properly trained, supported and held accountable to their job descriptions).
Essential Responsibilities:
- Pray regularly with and for the faculty, students, staff, and parents of Kirk Day School.
- Student Culture
- Work closely with Head of School to foster and preserve a school culture of grace, discipleship and learning.
- Establish and implement initiatives to encourage students to abide by school values and discipleship habits.
- Work with teachers to establish practices, traditions, and strategies that affirm and celebrate positive behaviors.
- Hold students accountable to respectful behavior outside of the classroom: lunchroom, recess, chapel, carpool, etc. and equip teachers with tools to do the same.
- Collaborate with HoS to develop special programs and activities, chapel, etc.
- Collaborate with Kirk Student Ministry and 6th Grade teachers to plan 6th Grade Camp
Student Behavior
- Support teachers in developing and implementing classroom climate that reflects the larger Kirk/KDS culture
- Support teachers in implementing classroom discipline that aligns with KDS’s philosophy of discipline
- Administer discipline that exceeds the classroom level by intervening in escalated or repeated cases
- Support teachers in utilizing strategies and creating behavior plans to help students develop skills to manage emotions and behavior
- Use understanding of research-based instructional strategies, behavior management strategies, and developmentally appropriate instruction to support teachers in meeting students’ needs
- Communicate with staff and parents/guardians regarding any major discipline issues and consequences, in consultation with the HoS.
- Initiate any changes to individual students’ Behavior Plans
- Keep accurate student behavior records
- Communicate class specific behaviors, personalities and class dynamics to rising grade-level teachers
Student Support Team (SST)
- Schedule and facilitate SST monthly, grade-level SST meetings
- Research best practices of intervention
- Hold teachers accountable for maintaining interventions and communicating with parents.
- Consult with school administration and learning specialists, as needed
- Maintain documentation of grade-level interventions
- Ensure students who need additional support are brought to the SST process
Assessment
- Oversee standardized testing including logistics, preparation and communication.
- Collect and manage the standardized testing processing. Analyze test results to ensure that standardized assessments are being utilized to inform curriculum and instruction choices of the school, classroom, and student level.
- ERB (1st-6th)
- Be main point of contact for ERB Testing
- Test-preparation support to faculty
- Teacher training on test administration
- Oversee testing administration details
- Conduct data analysis and share with the Director of Academics to help inform curriculum and instruction
Benchmark/Common Assessments
- Oversee the identification of students who need support. Equip and support teachers to address needs of students needing support.
- Data input and analysis for common assessment scores.
- Establish and implement school-wide common assessments and scoring tools.
- Report Cards/Conference Feedback
- Oversee student portfolios: protocol, exemplars, format, and organization
Field Trips
- Work with the Coordinator of Events and Community Life to schedule all in-house fields trips. Work with each grade level to unsure consistent standard and schedule of off-campus field trips.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Serve as a member of the Head of School’s Administration Team.
- Submit school culture and climate reports on a monthly basis to HoS to be shared at the school board meetings.
- Attend one board meeting per year to give highlights of school culture and student discipleship
- Co-lead with Director of Academics to create Class Lists
- Coach and collaborate with the After Care Coordinator to ensure expectations for students are consistent with those during the school day.
Accreditation
- Support the school’s accreditation process along with Director of Academics
- Work to align assessment practices with accreditation requirements.
- New Teacher Onboarding
Assist Head of School, along with Director of Academics, in equipping new teachers
to meet the vision and mission of KDS. Specifically by participating in monthly
individualized meetings, monthly group meetings, and in monthly grade level team meetings
- Serve on the Steering Committee team led by the HoS.
- Make recommendations and perform screenings for hiring teachers (as needed).
- Work with the HoS to secure and coach effective long-term substitute teachers.
Other duties as assigned by the Head of School.
