We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Takeoff Technician to support our estimating and preconstruction workflows. This role plays a critical part in ensuring bid accuracy, cost forecasting, and risk management across earthwork, underground utilities, paving, structures, and site improvements.
Position Overview
The Takeoff Technician supports the estimating team by producing accurate, well-documented quantity takeoffs and assisting in preparing reliable preconstruction data for heavy civil construction projects. This role ensures alignment between design, estimating, and field operations, helping the company pursue work strategically and execute projects efficiently.
This position is essential to maintaining the accuracy, efficiency, and competitiveness of Kinkaid Civil Construction’s preconstruction efforts.

Key Responsibilities
Quantities & Measurement
- Perform detailed digital takeoffs for:
- Earthwork (cut/fill, shrink/swell, over-excavation)
- Underground utilities (water, sewer, storm drain)
- Curb, gutter, base, asphalt, concrete, and structural components
- Generate quantity summaries, balance reports, and material estimates
- Apply appropriate swell/shrink factors, compaction assumptions, and production considerations
- Calculate trench volumes, bedding/backfill requirements, and trench safety allowances
- Account for pipe classes, depths, overbreak, and constructability factors
- Interpret civil plans, plan/profile sheets, cross sections, specifications, and details
- Correlate plans with geotechnical reports, traffic control plans, SWPPP, addenda, and RFIs
- Review plans for completeness, constructability, and estimating accuracy
- Maintain organized takeoff folders with proper version control and documentation
- Identify and flag drawing conflicts, scope gaps, and potential bid risks
- Assist in drafting Requests for Information (RFIs) to clarify scope and reduce risk
- Support scope definition and documentation for accurate bid submissions
- Coordinate closely with estimators and project managers to support bid development
- Align takeoffs with project phasing, sequencing, and construction methodology
- Interface with operations teams to validate constructability and production assumptions
- Assist in vendor and subcontractor scope delineation and quantity verification
- 2–4 years of heavy civil takeoffs, estimating support, or preconstruction experience
- Strong proficiency with digital takeoff software
- Experience using:
- Trimble Business Center or Agtek
- Bluebeam
- Microsoft Office Suite
- Planswift
- Strong understanding of:
- Earthwork principles (cut/fill, shrink/swell, balancing, over-excavation)
- Underground utility installation (pipe classes, trenching, structures)
- Roadway and paving construction
- Civil construction sequencing and workflows
- Ability to interpret plans, profiles, cross sections, and specifications
- High attention to detail and strong documentation practices
- Experience working with Utah agencies (UDOT, City, County, or Municipal)
- Experience with production-based estimating and cost coding systems (HCSS or similar)
- Knowledge of CSI divisions and DOT standards
- Ability to sit for extended periods and work on computers
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
- Ability to visit and navigate active construction sites
- Work environment includes both office and field settings
- Exposure to outdoor weather conditions, dust, noise, and heavy equipment
- Occasional extended hours may be required during peak bid periods
