Elementary Social Worker

TITLE: School Social Worker
 
QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's Degree in Social Work required (Master's in LCSW preferred)
 
REPORTS TO: Building Principals
 
JOB GOAL: 

1. To work intensively on a one-to-one basis with those students who have been unable to function effectively in school because of truancy, non-attendance, behavior, and/or home problems.                                   
2. The social worker will provide non-judgmental support and encouragement to students and their families. 
3. The social worker will also assist with student problems of a crisis nature and direct students and families to appropriate community resources.

 
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Maintains an office on school premises open to students and their families.  
2. Consults with and cooperates with guidance counselors, nurses, principals, and classroom teachers to assess the mental and emotional state of students who need intervention strategies.  
3. Counsels parents on improving home situations and serves as a liaison between parents and the school regarding schoolwork, behavior, attendance, and interests.  
4. Serves as liaison between the school and outside agencies such as the Division of Family Services, Juvenile Court, and other agencies responsible for child welfare.
5. Keeps staff informed of the responsibilities of reporting child abuse/neglect.  Works with teachers, parents, and students regarding such matters. 
6. Makes appropriate reports to the child abuse/neglect hotline as required by law. 
7. Makes home visits to gather helpful information on the student's background and develop cooperative home-school relationships.  
8. Helps families make appropriate contact with social agencies when needed. 
9. Participates with other members of the student personnel team in case conferences and regular staff meetings. 
10. Investigate attendance problems. 
11. Counsels students and parents on attendance and tardiness.
12. Works with families to improve attendance. 
13. Makes referrals to the DFS or the Prosecuting Attorney when necessary. 
14. Maintains and updates the directory of referral services to be utilized in crisis situations affecting students, such as suicide threats and alcohol and/or drug problems.  
15. Assists counselors and administrators in outlining and implementing preventive programs for possible "at-risk" students. 
16. Participates in Special Education Staffings and other Special Education meetings as requested by the building principal. 
17. Other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or his/her designee.

 
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Ten-month school year (200 days). 

Salary and work year to be established by the Board.
 
EVALUATION:

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with the provisions of the Board's policy on the evaluation of non-certified personnel.

Salary : $40,000 - $62,500
