Position Purpose:
All KHI employees are expected to perform their respective tasks and duties in such a way that supports KHI’s vision of providing the region’s best clinical care and patient service through an environment that fosters respect for others and pride in performance.
The Certified Surgical First Assistant provides aid in exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other intraoperative technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal patient outcomes. Surgical Tech First Assistant functions during the operation under the direction and supervision of the surgeon.
Key Responsibilities [List of material responsibilities and essentials duties which must be completed in achieving the objectives of the position]
1. Possess a working knowledge of operating room procedures with respect to attire, infection control and sterile technique, maintaining integrity of the sterile field and draping the surgical patient within the surgeon’s guidelines.
2. Assists in moving and positioning patients with regard to planned procedure.
3 Provide retraction of tissue for optimal visualization with regard to tissue type and appropriate retraction instrumentation and/or technique.
4. Assist in maintaining hemostasis by direct pressure, using and applying of appropriate surgical instruments for the task, placement of ties, placement of ligatures, using cautery, or other measures as directed by the surgeon.
5. Clamping, ligation and cutting of tissue per surgeon’s directive.
6. Closing of all wound layers (fascia, subcutaneous and skin) as per surgeon’s directive. Demonstrates familiarity with different sutures and suturing techniques to provide desired patient outcome.
7. Selects and applies wound dressing, splints (soft or rigid), or other applicable medical equipment as directed by the surgeon.
8. Integral part of the OR Team checking set-up and instrumentation, monitoring flow, making suggestions when appropriate.
9. Starts peripheral I.V. lines.
10. Provides patient care according to established NSAA standards and KHI policy and procedures.
11. Identifies emergency situations and use of sound judgment in instituting established procedures to correct them in a calm and efficient manner.
12. Apply the principles of asepsis in knowledgeable manner to provide optimum patient care.
13. Develops initiative in order to inquire and explore new surgical procedures and subjects related to the Operating Room and to the surgical patient.
14. Anticipates the needs of the surgeon in order to expedite the procedure, thus minimizing the patient’s exposure to trauma.
15. Differentiate sterilization methods for special equipment and instruments necessary for specific procedures.
16. Display dexterity in the use of surgical instruments and knowledge of the step-by step procedure for specific surgical procedures.
17. Understands the actions and use of anesthetic agents in order to be able to care for the patient in an intelligent manner.
18. Identify the structures and functions of human anatomy and physiology and recognizes common disorders of the body.

Education: Graduate of a school of Surgical Technology/ First Assistant program and/or similar experience
Licensure/Certifications:
1. Certification as a Surgical First Assistant (CSFA)
2. BLS certification through the American Heart Association

1. Demonstrates good oral and written communication skills.
2. Able to assist with movement of an adult patient weighing up to 300 pounds.
3. Able to care for patients with infectious diseases.
