 Position: Heavy Truck & Heavy Equipment Mechanic II

 

Job Overview

A Heavy Truck and Heavy Equipment Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining diesel trucks, construction machinery, and other large industrial equipment. This role ensures that vehicles and equipment operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with regulations.

 

Key Responsibilities

Equipment Maintenance & Repair

  • Perform routine and preventive maintenance on heavy trucks, diesel engines, loaders, excavators, bulldozers, forklifts, and other heavy equipment.
  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic issues using diagnostic tools and technical manuals.
  • Repair or replace defective components such as engines, transmissions, brakes, steering systems, suspension, and driveline components.
  • Conduct engine overhauls, tune-ups, and system calibrations.

Inspections & Diagnostics

  • Perform DOT inspections and ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulations.
  • Use computerized diagnostic equipment to troubleshoot engine and system faults.
  • Test repaired equipment to verify proper operation.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate service records, work orders, and parts usage logs.
  • Communicate repair needs, timelines, and cost estimates to supervisors or customers.
  • Follow company maintenance schedules and update equipment status reports.

Shop & Field Work

  • Work both in-shop and on job sites to perform emergency repairs or scheduled maintenance.
  • Operate service trucks and mobile repair equipment.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment.


Skills & Qualifications

Technical Skills

  • Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and heavy equipment components.
  • Ability to read schematics, service manuals, and diagnostic codes.
  • Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, and diagnostic software.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift heavy parts and equipment ex: often 50 lbs
  • Comfortable working in various environments: outdoors, in shops, around noise, grease, and heavy machinery.

Preferred Credentials

  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical school training is a plus.
  • Certifications such as ASE, CDL, or manufacturer specific training such as Caterpillar, Cummins, John Deere, etc
  • 2 to 5 years of experience in heavy truck or equipment repair.
