- Conduct safety inspections on vehicles and perform minor preventive maintenance and manual tasks to correct issues.
- Safely drive, secure, and operate a truck and trailer in connection with the transportation of equipment, asphalt, sand, gravel, and other materials.
- Operate and drive a truck fitted with a variety of equipment, including sander, snowplow, anti icer tank, water storage tank, and pump.
- Transport, distribute, and spread gravel, salt, oil asphalt, and other materials used for road maintenance.
- Operate and drive a Vactor truck to remove debris from catch basins, and drainage pipes.
- Adhere and strictly comply with OSHA and WISHA regulations ensuring the proper use of personal protective equipment (PEP) and all workplace safety protocols.
- Other duties as assigned.

Possess knowledge of and can adhere to federal, state, and county mandated safety regulations and policies and procedures for proper truck height and weight restrictions, equipment inspections, securing loads, driving laws, and defensive driving skills.
Demonstrated experience conducting thorough safety inspections on vehicles and performing minor preventative maintenance.
Ability to drive and operate vehicles with a load capacity of up to twelve yards, and with a gross weight exceeding 26,000lbs.
Ability to operate and maneuver a large truck in inclement weather and in high-density traffic; Ability to read maps. Experience operating a 5-yard or 10-yard capacity dump truck efficiently and safely.
Can safely tie down and secure equipment to a trailer.
Are knowledgeable of heavy manual labor activities such as heavy civil construction, road work or similar field. Have the ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
Are comfortable performing work outdoors and in inclement weather.
Demonstrates behaviors that include fairness, respect, and inclusiveness.
Are skilled in working with diverse stakeholders and maintaining effective relationships.
Is a team player and understands the value of working as a team and being reliable.
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to lift, carry, move, or handle up to 50 pounds.
Must be able to perform duties involving physical labor including bending, kneeling, standing, reaching, climbing, stooping, squatting, pushing, and twisting.
Additional Requirements (successful candidates must):
Successfully pass a pre-employment physical.
Submit to drug testing and test negative for presence of controlled substances; sign a Consent Form for release of Information for each employer for the past three (3) years; and successfully pass a background check for Alcohol and Controlled Substances testing, and a CDL background information check.
Have a valid Washington State Class A Commercial Driver's License and Medical certification prior to the Practical Exam date, without the following restrictions:
L–No Air Brake equipped CMV-Z
No Full air brake equipped CMV-E
No Manual transmission equipped CMV
Safety-Sensitive Position:
This position is considered safety sensitive. Applicants for these positions are required to undergo drug testing prior to employment and subsequent to commencement of employment, will be subject to random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, return to duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing in compliance with Federal DOT alcohol and controlled substance testing program protocols.
Work Location:
Multiple sites across King County, WA. The primary operations site is based in Renton, WA., with outlying maintenance shops located in: Black Diamond, Vashon, Skykomish, Fall City, and Redmond.
We are currently recruiting for the following locations: Redmond, WA and Fall City, WA.
Those candidates who pass the initial screening will be invited to participate in a in-person practical exam and interview. Only those who pass the practical assessment will move forward to the interview. The practical and interview will take place on the same day, the week of June 1st, 2026.
This recruitment is open to all qualified applicants and may be used to fill current and or/future career service, term-limited temporary, short-term temporary, and or/special duty positions over the next six months.
Vacancies in our Vashon Island, WA location would require residing on Vashon or Maury Island at the time of appointment.
Vacancies in our Skykomish, WA location would require residing no more than 45 minutes from the pit site at the time of appointment.
Special duty opportunities are open only to current King County career service employees who have completed their initial probation. Special duty applicants must have approval from their current supervisor to accept an assignment. Current employees selected for special duty will be compensated based upon the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement, King County Personnel Guidelines, or Coalition Labor Agreement for their base assignment.

WORK SCHEDULE:
The work schedule will consist of five, eight-hour days in the fall/winter, Monday – Friday, 7:00 am – 3:30 pm, and four, ten-hour days in the spring/summer, Monday – Thursday, 6:00 am – 4:30 p.m. This position is Non-Exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is eligible for overtime pay, prior supervisor approval.
EMERGENCY DESIGNATION STATUS:
First Responder - Employees who, in the early stages of an incident, are responsible for protecting and preserving life, property, evidence, the environment, and restoring order.
