The Capital Services Unit (CSU) designs, permits, implements and monitors stormwater projects across King County. CSU has a multidisciplinary staff of ecologists, engineers, and project managers with experience in watershed assessment, project conception and design, regulatory management, construction procurement and supervision, and project effectiveness monitoring.
We are looking for a resourceful, technically-skilled, and field-savvy team player who can support our multi-disciplinary teams to advance high priority stormwater projects. Who is Eligible: This position is open to the public, but first consideration will be given to all current King County Protec Local 17A bargaining unit employees eligible for a lateral transfer (transferring within the Environmental Scientist III classification and having passed probation).

Telecommuting Requirement
The work associated with this position will be performed predominantly by teleworking, complemented with onsite work and meetings as needed. Employees will have access to shared workspaces at various King County facilities. Employees must reside in Washington state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.
Employees will be provided with a County issued laptop and must maintain a workspace with an internet connection (access may be supplemented in some situations) where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours.
King County has a robust collection of tools and resources to support working remotely. The individual selected for this opportunity will be joining an innovative and progressive team that is redefining how we work as we transition to the department's hybrid environment.
Work Location: Predominately teleworking and the King Street Center 201 S. Jackson St., Seattle WA 98104.
Work Schedule: This position is non-exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), and it is overtime eligible. This full-time position works a 40-hour work week.

- Lead or participate as senior lead ecologist on interdisciplinary project teams in planning, designing, permitting, constructing and monitoring capital stormwater or flood reduction projects
- Manage, design and direct aquatic, floodplain habitat, water quality, and general biological surveys. Analyze data and present results in reports and in presentations.
- Conduct endangered species surveys for salmonids and other aquatic organisms and prepare biological assessments and related Endangered Species Act Section 7 documents. Integrate findings into project designs.
- Identify all local, state and federal environmental permits needed for project implementation and prepare, submit and monitor permit applications for timely acquisition. Develop efficient permit strategies and schedules for projects. Coordinate with tribal stakeholders and negotiate permit conditions and issues with regulatory agencies.
- Working knowledge of current stormwater science and applied methods for reducing chemical and physical impacts to biota and people.
- Bachelor's degree in natural, physical, or environmental sciences, or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience which would provide the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties as described
- Experience planning, designing and/or monitoring large, complex multi-year capital projects related to development and infrastructure in critical areas such as streams, wetlands, floodplains, and steep slopes
- Knowledge of aquatic and terrestrial monitoring techniques and approaches and the ability to lead physical, biological, and water quality monitoring studies
- Working knowledge of current stormwater science and applied methods for reducing chemical and physical impacts to biota and people
- Strong working knowledge of wetland, fish, stream, river and/or floodplain ecology in the Puget Sound lowlands
- Advanced education in ecology, environmental science, river or floodplain ecology.
- Knowledge and experience working on stormwater or other infrastructure projects in river and stream, floodplain, and wetland conditions in King County.
- Extensive experience applying for and obtaining permits for complex infrastructure projects in and around rivers, streams, wetlands and other critical areas.
- Collaborates – Builds partnerships and works collaboratively with others from diverse backgrounds to meet shared objectives
