JOB CAPTAIN

Kimmich | Smith Architecture

Kimmich | Smith Architecture, LLC (KSA) is a growing Tampa-based boutique architecture firm serving development sectors that include prominent multifamily, condominium, hospitality, commercial, office, and mixed-use projects. We support clients through every phase of design and construction to help them discover and realize the creative potential of their properties through identity-driven design, strong technical documentation, and responsive white-glove service.

THE ROLE

The Job Captain is the team member who keeps project production moving forward. Working along side the Project Architect and Project Manager, this role owns the day-to-day development, coordination, organization, and completeness of the drawing sets. The Job Captain is expected to be proactive and self-reliant with a natural disposition to anticipate needs, identify conflicts, research solutions, and bring clear recommendations forward - not wait to be told what, how, or where to address routine project issues.

This is a hands-on production leadership role for someone who enjoys documenting buildings, coordinating a multidisciplinary team, and carrying projects from schematic design through permit and construction documents in a collaborative small-firm environment.

KEY RESULT AREA 1 | PROTECT THE PRODUCT

Winning looks like: Accurate and comprehensive drawing sets.

  • Lead the organization and development of architectural drawing sets from schematic design through construction documents to protect the design intent.
  • Develop and review plans, elevations, sections, schedules, and construction details for accuracy, consistency, constructability, and completeness.
  • Research, interpret, and apply applicable code requirements; experience with building, energy, life-safety, accessibility, and local municipal codes is essential.
  • Understand what a fully-coordinated permit and construction set requires and identify missing information before client review or permit submission.
  • Use Revit and related software / technology / A.I. proficiently while following and improving KSA documentation standards.

KEY RESULT AREA 2 | SAFEGUARD COLLABORATION

Winning looks like: Clear and concise coordination.

  • Coordinate architectural documents with Structural, Civil, MEP, Landscape, Interior Design, and Specialty Consultants throughout project development.
  • Take ownership of arranging internal and external coordination meetings when needed, while informing the Project Architect or Project Manager of potential design conflicts.
  • Prepare clear meeting agendas, minutes, coordination notes, and follow-up updates; track decisions and ensure agreed changes are incorporated.
  • Identify conflicts and unresolved questions early, research practical options, elevate issues with recommended next steps and participate in efforts to brainstorm solutions.
  • Communicate professionally and concisely (verbal, written, drawing) with project team members, consultants, and clients as assigned.

KEY RESULT AREA 3 | MEET AND BEAT DEADLINES AND MILESTONES

Winning looks like: Complete and accurate deliverables submitted on or ahead of time.

  • Plan and manage personal production time; forecast the effort needed to complete drawings, details, and coordination tasks.
  • Break milestones into actionable tasks and communicate progress, risks, and resource needs early to the Project Architect or Project Manager.
  • Schedule internal reviews and consultant coordination with enough time to resolve comments or discussion items before each deliverable.
  • Follow through on commitments and confirm that assigned deliverables are complete, coordinated, QA/QC’d, and ready for submission.

SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE

  • Demonstrates ownership, sound judgment, curiosity, creativity, and the initiative to move their work forward with appropriate guidance.
  • Possesses strong technical knowledge of design, construction details and constructability.
  • Has a working knowledge of current building, life-safety, accessibility, and local municipal codes.
  • Understands drawing-set organization and the information required for permitting and construction from previous successful experience.
  • Communicates clearly in writing, conversation, drawings, and markups.
  • Is organized, dependable, collaborative, detail-oriented, receptive to feedback, and willing to help where needed to achieve team goals.
  • Is service-oriented with a respectful demeanor who can prioritize time and focus when needed.

DESIRED EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

  • Professional degree in architecture or comparable architectural training and experience.
  • Approximately 5 or more years of progressively responsible architectural production experience; demonstrated capability is more important than years alone.
  • Proficiency in Revit and BIM coordination is required; familiarity with Bluebeam, AutoCAD, Adobe Cloud and Microsoft Office is expected. Experience with A.I. or Lumion is a plus.
  • Successful experience coordinating consultant documents and producing permit/construction document sets is crucial.
  • Florida project and code experience is preferred; path to architectural licensure and/or sustainable accreditation is valued but not required.
  • Rendering, graphic design, and presentation experience is beneficial to the role, secondary to technical documentation and coordination capability.
