Campus Recreation Specialist (Full Time)
Location: Olathe, KS
PURPOSE OF POSITION
KidsTLC delivers an integrated spectrum of medical, clinical, residential, and outpatient services to children and families. The PRTF Campus Recreation Specialist is responsible for organizing and implementing therapeutic groups/activities, providing direct support and client care within the therapeutic community, and providing other therapeutic services and treatment planning for youth placed at KidsTLC on the weekend day scheduled.
Tasks are performed under the direction of the Director of Campus Recreation. Work performance is reviewed through formal supervision, informal supervision, reports, and evaluations. Incumbent to this position is a KidsTLC employee and subject to the KidsTLC personnel policies and procedures.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities

EDUCATION And/or EXPERIENCE
LANGUAGE ABILITY
Must have excellent interpersonal, oral, record keeping, and written communication skills. The employee must have the ability to express or exchange ideas by means of written and verbal communication with both internal and external customers. The employee must have the ability to convey and receive detailed information or important instructions to and from various sources. This position must possess and demonstrate knowledge of all KidsTLC programs in order to train and educate the importance and development of leading groups within the diverse services provided.
DESCISION MAKING
Extensive decision-making exists in this position. Decisions may be required in the following areas: strategic analysis and research; program performance; personnel performance; strategic planning; COA/CQI; funding; reporting progress; program implementation and training; community issues; community resources.
Must have the ability to assess and identify program measurements and outcomes. The employee must have the ability to respond to crisis and conflict with confidence and professionalism. This employee must have the ability to work in concert with the KidsTLC Operations Management Team, and the KidsTLC Senior Leadership Team.
SUPERVISION
The Campus Recreational Specialist reviews work performance and job-related decisions and provides general supervision of this position.
ACCOUNTABILITY
This position is responsible for utilizing recreation and other play-based interventions to address the assessed needs of individuals and groups with illnesses and/or disabling conditions, as a means to psychological and physical health, recovery, & well-being. This individual or team will seek consultation with treatment team members, clinical team, and supervisors. This employee is responsible for assisting in the compliance and implementation of all relevant KidsTLC Policy and Procedures, as well as regulatory standards, e.g., COA & PRTF.
PERSONAL RELATIONS
This position will have frequent contact with youth, KidsTLC support staff, Residential Program Services staff, KidsTLC Operations Management staff, and KidsTLC Senior Leadership staff. Occasionally, this person will have contact with various Kansas state department management, federal funding authorities, university faculty and management, and general public. It is imperative that the incumbent to this position engages in accordance with the KidsTLC polices, KidsTLC Constitution, and PACE with all individuals in which he/she may interact.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Cognitive Demands
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Computer Skills
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of industry specific software, industry specific systems and other web-based software programs, Microsoft Office including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
Physical Demands

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

- Schedule: 10am-8pm on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
- Lead Campus-wide Activities & Programming specifically for the weekends (no unit designation).
- Provide structure and further therapeutic programming support during the waking hours for our clientele on the weekends.
- Assist with community events and lead volunteers in recreation activities.
- Collaboration with Campus Rec Specialist: planning & implementation of C2 – Campus Club, curriculum development, client recreation-leisure assessments, attendance charting & documentation, and supply gathering & distribution.
- Implement and support programming on the weekends designed by the Campus Rec Specialist.
- Coordinate and organize materials for therapeutic group activities that promote leisure-related skills, knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors.
- Maintain accurate and timely required documentation by completing daily recordkeeping for group therapy & other related client records - finalize recordkeeping within the time frame specified by KidsTLC policy and procedures and the regulatory standards.
- Work collaterally with Campus Managers and Milieu Coordinators in developing a schedule with detailed activities/groups to be utilized for weekend support.
- Keep up to date on personal professional development through KidsTLC and outside agencies.
- Maintain a thorough knowledge of the KidsTLC Constitution and consistently use it as the guiding document for leading staff and caring for clients each day.
- Have a thorough understanding of Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy as the treatment model for KidsTLC expressed through P.A.C.E.; and model this behavior to staff and children daily.
- Lead and model DDP practices and principles in client interactions and when supporting staff development of DDP based skills.
- Perform other duties as assigned or requested.
- This position has no direct reports.

EDUCATION And/or EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor or Masters level education in Therapeutic Recreation preferred.
- Therapeutic Recreation Specialist certification (CTRS) highly recommended, but not required.
- Knowledge and experience planning and implementing therapeutic groups based in play on a small & large scale.
- Experience working with children who have emotional and behavioral dysregulation due to early childhood relational trauma, along with knowledge of PRTF treatment.
- Knowledge of state and federal regulations related to providing services to a population with special needs.
- Exceptional interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Adaptability and outstanding problem-solving skills.
- Sound judgement and decision-making skills.
- Able to establish rapport with people; establishing climate of trust, confidence, and mutual respect, communicating direction and effectively with a range of complex and diverse needs.
