Position Summary
The After-School Program Counselor is responsible for creating a safe, engaging, and supportive environment for elementary-aged students during after-school hours. Counselors provide homework assistance, facilitate STEAM and enrichment activities, supervise outdoor recreation, and serve as positive role models while ensuring student safety and well-being, and amplifying youth voice and leadership.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Supervise and actively engage groups of elementary-aged students.
- Provide homework assistance and academic support.
- Plan and lead STEM, arts, recreation, and enrichment activities.
- Organize outdoor games and physical activities.
- Maintain a safe, positive, and inclusive learning environment.
- Promote positive behavior using program expectations.
- Monitor student attendance and ensure accurate documentation.
- Communicate professionally with parents, school personnel, and coworkers.
- Follow all Kids 4 College, school district, and licensing policies and procedures.
- Attend required staff meetings and training sessions.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- College coursework in Education, Child Development, Recreation, or a related field is preferred.
- Experience working with elementary-aged children in an educational, recreational, or youth development setting is preferred.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to lead activities and manage groups of children.
- Dependable, organized, energetic, and professional.
Preferred Qualifications
- CPR and First Aid Certification, Mandated Reporter, Suicide Awareness and Prevention (or willingness to obtain).
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus.
- Experience in STEM, arts, sports, or youth enrichment programming is highly desirable.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and actively supervise children for extended periods.
- Ability to participate in outdoor activities and recreational games.
- Ability to lift up to 40 pounds.
Schedule
- Monday through Friday
- Approximately 2:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. (hours may vary by school site)
- Additional hours may be available during school breaks, minimum days, and summer programs.
