The Applications Specialist supports the design and application of Kidde Fire Systems products for commercial, industrial, mission-critical, and special-hazard applications. The role works directly with distributors, consulting engineers, Sales, Engineering, Product Management, Customer Service, and Technical Support. We are seeking an engineer with a strong technical foundation who can contribute to core design activities while developing deeper expertise in special-hazard fire suppression systems. The position emphasizes timely, accurate engineering support, clear communication, and ownership of incoming applications requests.

Specific responsibilities for this position include:

  • Review customer specifications, drawings, and project requirements to determine appropriate Kidde Fire Systems solutions.
  • Develop engineered and pre-engineered fire suppression system designs in accordance with Kidde design manuals, applicable codes and standards, and product listings/approvals.
  • Prepare and review system calculations, equipment selections, Bills of Material (BOMs), and supporting technical documentation for distributor and customer applications.
  • Perform flow calculations and system sizing and create or revise AutoCAD/Revit drawings, including layouts, piping drawings, isometrics, P&IDs, and equipment arrangements.
  • Review customer drawings and calculations and provide clear technical comments and recommendations.
  • Research technical questions and independently gather information from internal and external sources.
  • Provide applications and product support to distributors, Regional Sales Managers, consulting engineers, contractors, and other internal and external customers.
  • Support quotation and estimating activities by identifying equipment, design requirements, assumptions, and technical risks.
  • Own and manage multiple incoming applications requests from intake through completion, communicating status, priorities, technical questions, and expected delivery dates to stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with Sales, Engineering, Product Management, Customer Service, and Technical Support to resolve project-specific technical issues.
  • Support engineering standards, technical documentation, knowledge sharing, continuous improvement, customer training, and occasional field/site activities.
  • Participate in technical training and mentorship to build expertise in Kidde fire suppression technologies and progressively take on more complex engineering applications.
  • Travel occasionally to support distributor training, customer meetings, and pre-design site visits.

Required Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering, Civil Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a related technical discipline; an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be considered.
  • 2 years of engineering, applications engineering, system design, consulting engineering, or related technical experience; 2–5 years preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, technical manuals, and project documentation.
  • Experience with AutoCAD or similar engineering/design software.
  • Working knowledge of engineering calculations and mechanical principles such as pressure, flow, piping, and system sizing.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple requests, take ownership of assigned deliverables, communicate progress proactively, and work independently and collaboratively.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience with one or more special-hazard fire suppression technologies such as clean agent, inert gas, carbon dioxide, dry chemical, or wet chemical.
  • Familiarity with applicable NFPA standards, including NFPA 12, 17, 17A, 72, 101, and/or 2001.
  • Experience with hydraulic or flow-calculation software, Revit, and/or BIM coordination.
  • Experience preparing BOMs, quotations, estimates, technical submittals, or reviewing fire suppression drawings and calculations.
  • Familiarity with UL/FM product listings or relevant professional credentials such as NICET, EIT, or PE track is beneficial.
  • Experience supporting distributors or customers with technical questions and application-specific problem-solving.
  • Working knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, Projects, Power Point, etc) applications.
  • Interest in developing expertise in special-hazard fire suppression applications within a collaborative engineering team.
