Position: Registered Nurse / Change Nurse

Supervisor: Director of Nursing

Division: Health and Human Services Administration

Department: Kickapoo Community Health Center

Responsibilities:

Assists the Director of Nursing in managing the nursing and clinical duties of the Nursing Department. Provides professional nursing care; collaborates with other health care professionals in planning, organizing, and coordinating the care and treatment of patients. Provides nursing and patient education and counseling in accordance to evidence-based curriculums. Oversees TVFC program and Special Diabetes Program for Indians. Responsible for education, orientation and training of nursing staff including competency testing. Acts as Infection Control/Employee Health Nurse for Health Center.

Essential Duties and responsibilities include the following:

· Conducts nursing assessments and provides appropriate nursing care to patients of all ages.

· Plans and provides comprehensive patient care by utilizing and documenting the nursing process

· Communicates with patient, provider and/or staff in order to coordinate the health care needs of patients and their families

· Works collaboratively with CHRs, Case Manager and PRC program using a team approach to coordinate care/services and ensure patient needs are met

· Provides education to patients and their families

· Documents all patient progress, encounters, treatments and education in the EHR as per medical record policies

· Administers immunizations and other medications to patients per provider orders

· Ensures adequate supplies, medications and other supplies are available for patient treatment

· Provides a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors by reduction and control of environmental hazards and risk and preventing accidents and injuries

· Operates and monitors medical equipment such as EKGs, vital sign monitors, nebulizers, etc. Reports equipment failures and/or issues promptly and places lock out tags until ready for use

· Maintains professional knowledge and proficiency through continuing education, in-services and workshops

· Provides education to clinical staff based on learning needs and resources

· Documents educational assessments, topics, self-management goals and evaluation; uses

· teaching strategies with a variety of approaches and methods to incorporate adult learning theory.

· Assists the Director of Nursing in orienting new staff and re-orienting current staff including initial and continued competency assessments in accordance to training protocols

· Assists the Director of Nursing in carrying out infection control functions of the Health Center

· Works with the Diabetes Coordinator in meeting the requirements of the Special Diabetes Program for Indians; assists in completing the annual diabetes audit

· Assists with scheduling and timely processing of referrals in accordance to referral protocols

· Provides technical support, monitoring and data analysis and quality improvement assistance to departments involved in process improvement and/or QI activities

· Participates in performance improvement activities to measure, assess and improve the quality of patient care.

· Performs other tasks as may be assigned from time to time by supervisor.

Knowledge, skills and abilities for the position:

· Computer literate/knowledge, ability to use office machines, printers, PC, copier and calculator.

· Mathematics: Ability to perform simple arithmetic for time keeping and counting calculations.

· Language & Communication: Ability to read, write, speak and understand English and communicate effectively with others.

· Ability to understand, provide and follow written and verbal direction.

· Attention to detail and accuracy.

· Ability to manage and maintain security of confidential data and information.

· Ability to exercise independent and sound judgment.

· Cultural awareness of and sensitivity to Kickapoo traditions, religious beliefs and way of life

· Must have good customer service skills and be a team player.

· Employee must demonstrate ability to solve problems and deal with a variety of variables; ability to interpret and provide instructions furnished in written, verbal, diagram or schedule form.

Supervision exercised:

This position does not carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.

Education/experience requirements:

Minimum Qualifications: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Must hold an unrestricted Registered Nurse license in the State of Texas and be in good standing with the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners. Current certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) required.

Preferred Qualifications: Prefer two or more years nursing experience in community health or public health and working with Native American population.
