Job Summary
Will oversee maintenance and repairs of electrical, plumbing, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), carpentry, painting, and other building systems.
Recommends hires and trains carpenters. Organizes and oversees the schedules and work of assigned staff.
Work is performed with considerable latitude for independent judgment and action. Assignments and instructions are received orally or written from immediate supervisor.
Job Duties & Responsibilities
- Directs day to day activities of carpenters in the Facilities Management Department;
- Monitors actions of carpenters for adherence to Tribal policies and escalates concerns to supervisor;
- Indirectly oversees Carpentry staff positions;
- Aids in staff evaluations process and annual employee safety programs;
- Ensures adherence to local, state or federal standards for employee training, specifically, HIPAA compliance, and OSHA safety;
- Assists in the recruitment, selections, orientations, trainings, and of the coaching Carpenters;
- Provides carpentry support to KIC Housing Programs on as needed basis;
- Maintenance projects in multiple KIC facilities, construction, and remodeling of structures in the Ketchikan area working, include but are not limited to:

- Foundation shoring and retrofitting
- Framing floors, walls, and roofs
- Drywall hanging, taping, and repair
- Roofing application (all types)
- Replacement of windows and doors
- Weatherproofing
- Insulation
- Decking and siding
- Other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications (Education & Experience)
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of five years of progressive construction or maintenance work.
- A combination of relevant experience, education, and training may substitute for education and experience requirements on a year-for-year basis.
- Proof of valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.
Preferred Qualifications (Education & Experience)
- Associates degree in construction technology, or carpentry training.
- Minimum of five years of progressive construction or maintenance work.
- Minimum of two years leadership experience.
- Certified Lead Carpenter (CLC).
- Experience in community clinic preferred and a strong commitment to multi-disciplinary teamwork.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Familiarity of acceptable building practices, especially those pertaining to weatherproofing structures in southeast Alaska.
- Knowledge of building codes, reading of blueprints and specification sheets, and adherence to safety standards are required.
- Ability to identify and resolve issues quickly and efficiently.
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks including framing, finishing, and rough carpentry.
- Strong understanding and sensitivity to American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) Tribal culture and lifestyle, working effectively with AI/AN populations.
- Strong mathematical skills, calculations, measurements, quantities and angles knowledge.
- Strong knowledge of woodworking methods, cutting, shaping, jointing, and finishing wood.
- Skills in a wide range of hand and power tools, saws, drills, nail guns, routers and safety.
- Ability to understand and interpret architectural blueprints and technical drawings.
- Knowledge of building codes, framing techniques, and the principles of structural stability.
- Strong understanding of safety protocols and the ability on work safely on a construction site.
- Effective oral and written communication skills with sensitivity to the lifestyles of targeted participants.
- Skills in operating personal computers using a variety of computer software.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with management, coworkers, and outside contacts.
- Ability to learn and apply program/agency operating policies and procedures.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and tasks concurrently and meet deadlines.
- Ability to work independently as well as with teams.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and comply with all applicable federal and tribal privacy laws and KIC policy (HIPAA, HITECH, etc.).
