What are the responsibilities and job description for the Environmental & Fisheries Intern position at KETCHIKAN INDIAN CORPORATION?
This internship is heavily oriented toward fieldwork and the collection of wildlife and environmental data. The Fisheries and Environmental Intern position involves conducting early-detection, monitoring, and removal-trapping efforts for the European Green Crab. The intern will work alongside KIC tribal managers and agency partners to assess the spread and quantity of current European green crab invasions. Responsibilities include conducting early-detection sampling methods, such as trapping and eDNA, at sites along the coast of Revillagigedo Island in nearshore environments.
Conducting monitoring efforts at established sites using established protocols to gather information on green crab trends. Assembling field gear, safely navigating to and within remote locations, and setting traps at predetermined sites. Recording data using electronic field apps and/or field datasheets, ensuring data is accurately recorded and summarized. Protecting native species by following protocols to reduce bycatch, quickly and carefully release any incidental bycatch, and remove and humanely euthanize captured green crab.
Participating in regional rapid response actions where new green crabs are detected, following the lead biologists’ directives.
