Job Summary
The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) will provide patient care in a clinical setting in accordance with the scope and practice guidelines set forth by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA. As a Certified Medical Assistant at KIC Tribal Health Clinic (THC), you will play a critical role in delivering innovative treatments while supporting our team and ensuring exceptional patient care.
Job Summary
The Medical Assistant (MA) Apprentice will provide patient care in a clinical setting in accordance with the scope and practice guidelines set forth by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) or the National Certified Medical Assistant Association (NCMA). Practice will be completed professional and be governed by the certifying body and the specific policies KIC maintains to ensure that all patient needs are met.
Job Duties & Responsibilities
- Welcomes and provides information to patients, visitors, and tribal members either in person or phone.
- Sends reminder to patients to schedule preventive care appointment.
- Adheres to rescheduling appointment protocol.
- Attends and participates in appropriate committee meetings to improve quality processes and maintain quality results.
- Works with Clinic staff in preparation, participation, and closure of medical services daily.
- Incumbent will prepare and gather information needed for patient visit.
- Incumbent is responsible for rooming patients per clinic guidelines.
- Completes appropriate aspects of patient care to include: vital signs, height, weight, and an eye exam if needed.
- Setup and assist in procedures, while observing sterile technique.
- Provide approved injections (vaccines and state-approved IM medications), ECG’s, pre-exam prep, assist provider during exam, and collects lab specimens.
- Performs minor, non-invasive treatments to include: simple wound care and suture/staple removal after assessment by a provider.
- Assist in moving and/or transporting patients as needed.
- Answer patient questions or refer them to the proper source.
- Clean exam rooms per protocol, observing standard precautions based on reported symptoms.
- Administration of approved medication, after completion of school with oversite by Registered Nurse.
- Maintains a working inventory of medical supplies.
- Performs daily stock of exam rooms and monthly outdates, including appropriate disposal of expired items.
- Cleans dirty / used supplies and equipment.
- Reports any unsafe conditions to appropriate supervisor upon discovery.
- Other related duties as assigned.
Certified Medical Assistant II

- Participate in or lead organized staff education
- Must participate in an annual outreach activity
Certified Medical Assistant III
- All Job Duties and Responsibilities Assigned to CMA I and CMA II and
- Must teach, organize and lead positive change through policy development and implementation
- Must participate in outreach activities twice a year
- Acts as a role model and mentor for all CMA staff
Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of universal precautions and safety measures in providing patient care;
- Knowledge and skill in gathering, reporting, and recording patient information;
- Knowledge of EMR and all associated care programs;
- Knowledge and ability to carry out rules of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), which protects patient rights;
- Ability to manage simultaneously multiple tasks, including phone calls, computer operations, and in-person visitors;
- Skilled in customer service and communication to ensure patients feel comfortable before, during, and after appointment(s);
- Ability to communicate and collaborate professionally;
- Ability to recognize, identify, and resolve problems and issues without direct supervision;
- Ability to work independently;
- Ability to assist medical providers during procedures, ensuring an efficient and smooth workflow
- Ability to take detailed and accurate patient histories
- Ability to organize and manage patient records and appointment scheduling to optimize and support clinic operations

Work Environment
The environment involves the usual risks and stress within an ambulatory health care facility. The employee may be exposed to communicable diseases. Safety precautions for employees such as blood drawing for screening of various diseases such as hepatitis, required immunizations, etc. are necessary.
The employee is occasionally subject to verbal abuse, threats, and physical violence from angry, hostile, or disgruntled patients and/or family members
Conditions of Hire
- May be required to possess and maintain a valid driver's license or capable of obtaining one, as well as be insurable by KIC’s company insurance.

Qualifications:Medical Assistant Apprentice - Minimum Education & Experience Required
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- On-the-job training will be provided in augmentation with the accredited Medical Assistant program currently enrolled in.
- Must be able to obtain a national certification for Medical Assistant within 6 months completion of enrolled Medical Assistant Program
CMA I - Minimum Education & Experience Required
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- 1 year of medical assistant or similar experience
- Possess and maintain a current National certification as a medical assistant (AAMA, NCMA or CCMA)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
- A combination of relevant experience, education, and training may substitute for education and experience requirements on a year-for-year basis.
CMA II - Minimum Education & Experience Required
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- 3 years of Certified Medical Assistant experience
- Possess and Maintain a current National certification as a Medical Assistant (AAMH, NCMA, or CCMA)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
- Must complete training as a preceptor within 1 year
CMA III - Minimum Education & Experience Required
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- 5 years of experience as a Certified Medical Assistant
- Possess and Maintain a current National certification as a Medical Assistant (AAMH, NCMA, or CCMA)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
- Must remain current on training as a preceptor
