Senior Engineer

Full-time

West Orange, NJ

The Tim and Caroline Reynolds Center for Spinal Stimulation | Kessler Foundation investigates spinal cord stimulation as a means of restoring physiological function after spinal cord injury. Studies range from first-in-human work with implanted systems to non-invasive stimulation, and the instrumentation and analysis pipelines behind them are developed in house.

The Senior Engineer will be responsible for the measurement systems used in these human experiments, the software that collects and analyzes the resulting data, and contributions to the scientific output of the lab.

Responsibilities include

  • Design, prototype, and build custom instrumentation for human experiments, including sensor interfaces, signal conditioning, isolation, and synchronization hardware.
  • Integrate commercial and custom hardware into working experimental setups: biopotential amplifiers, DAQ systems, stimulators, transducers, and wearable sensors.
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and document lab hardware so builds can be reproduced and repaired by others.
  • Develop and validate signal processing pipelines in MATLAB and Python for EMG, ECG, blood pressure, PPG, and IMU data, along with electrophysiological responses to stimulation.
  • Process and analyze motion-capture data, including calibration, marker reconstruction, and kinematic modeling.
  • Build reproducible, version-controlled analysis workflows that non-engineering staff can run.
  • Build graphical interfaces for real-time acquisition, monitoring, and offline processing that staff can operate independently.
  • Establish and maintain data storage conventions and databases for tracking experimental variables across studies.
  • Participate in data collection for IRB-approved studies and oversee downstream processing and quality control.
  • Provide occasional technical support for implant-related procedures, including intraoperative recording and device setup.
  • Author and co-author publications, present at scientific meetings, and contribute technical sections and preliminary data to grant applications.
  • Mentor junior engineers, research assistants, and students on code, hardware, and engineering practice.

Required qualifications

  • Master's degree in Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • At least three years of relevant engineering experience in a research, clinical, or medical-device setting.
  • Demonstrated experience with biosignal processing: filtering, artifact rejection, spectral analysis, feature extraction, and event detection applied to physiological data.
  • Working knowledge of electrophysiology and the practical issues that come with recording from humans, including electrode selection and placement, grounding and isolation, stimulation artifact, and noise.
  • Proficiency in MATLAB and Python for scientific computing and instrument control.
  • Hands-on experience building and debugging electronic hardware: benchtop instrumentation, circuit prototyping, and reading and producing schematics.
  • Ability to work directly with research participants, including individuals with spinal cord injury, in a respectful and safety-conscious manner.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience with neuromodulation or neural interfaces, including epidural, transcutaneous, and/or peripheral nerve stimulation.
  • Experience with electric field modeling and simulation (for example COMSOL, SimNIBS, and/or comparable tools) for stimulation analysis.
  • GUI development experience, such as PyQt, MATLAB App Designer, and/or similar frameworks.
  • Familiarity with motion capture systems (OptiTrak, Vicon, or similar) and biomechanical modeling tools.
  • Real-time and embedded development experience, including microcontroller programming in C or C .
  • PCB schematic capture and layout experience (KiCad, Altium, or similar).
  • Record of peer-reviewed publications and contributions to funded grant applications.
  • Familiarity with human subjects research requirements, including IRB protocols, Good Clinical Practice, and data privacy standards.
