Job Type: Part Time (15-25 hours per week)
Schedule: Weekdays, with regular evening and Saturday shifts
Location: Kershaw County Library, Elgin
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Provide welcoming front-line assistance to library patrons, who will have a variety of requests. Handle the circulation and routing of library materials.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Offer customer service by greeting patrons, performing circulation desk activities such as materials checkout/check-in, processing materials, receiving library fines and fees, registering new users, processing lost cards and address changes, answering the phone, and other customer service related tasks as needed.
- Maintain library public areas in a clean and orderly fashion, cleaning computer stations and any other general cleaning and/or organizing tasks as assigned.
- Communicate effectively, courteously and professionally will all library patrons, guests, co-workers, and supervisors.
- Provide guidance and enforcement of the rules of conduct directly with patrons, and collaborate with other staff when necessary in coordinating these rules.
- Shelve books and maintains the library collection as assigned.
- Provide basic instruction and support on the use of public computers.
- Prepare library for opening and/or closing.
- Participate in staff meetings and trainings.
- Assist with and/or conducts library programs and workshops.
- Assist supervisors with special projects.
- Other tasks as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Ability to work effectively, both independently and with a team.
- Excellent communication, customer service and decision-making skills.
- Basic technical/computer skills including email, web searching, and the ability to learn the library checkout software.
- Ability to perform physical functions of the position, primarily including but not limited to standing for extended periods at the checkout desk, lifting books, pushing book carts, and stooping to assist patrons.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- High school graduate or GED
- Two years of customer service or clerical work experience
WORK CONDITIONS
Work will be performed throughout the library, to include the circulation desk, library shelving area, meeting/programming spaces, and occasional outdoor events. This position will be required to stand for long periods of time at the circulation desk.
