What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lawn Maintenance Technician position at Kershaw County, SC?
The Lawn Maintenance Technician supports the Deputy Maintenance Director by providing support responsibilities during assigned hours. The Lawn Maintenance Technician is an essential role in maintaining the interiors/exteriors of County buildings. In addition to regular building maintenance functions, the Maintenance Technician provides direct support to County departments in lawn care and building maintenance of County facilities. The Lawn Maintenance Technician should demonstrate a professional, courteous, and helpful attitude.
Qualifications: Requires a High School diploma or equivalent combination of training and experience. Required to have and maintain a clear background check, a good driving record and a valid SC driver’s license. Must pass drug screening and be dependable and prompt.
I. Essential duties: Essential duties shall include, but will not be limited to, the following:
1. Lawn Maintenance Functions:
A. Maintains exterior grounds at assigned County Facilities.
B. Pick up litter on building grounds.
C. Assures safety during inclement weather to including shoveling, salting, providing slip protection on wet floors, securing against wind damage, snow removal from roofs, etc.
D. Applies lawn and weed chemicals according to established safety procedures.
E. Adheres to safety measures for cleaning, lifting, moving, and operating equipment.
F. Performs minor repair and maintenance as authorized by Deputy Maintenance Director.
G. Performs other duties as assigned.
2. Building Maintenance Functions
A. Coordinates with the Maintenance Supervisor in initiating maintenance service requests according to established procedures. Follows-through to assure that maintenance is performed in a timely manner.
B. Assists Maintenance Supervisor in maintaining inventory and requesting materials, tools and equipment needed to accomplish assigned tasks.
C. Maintains awareness of energy conservation and make suggestions of methods and procedures to consider energy.
D. Secures equipment and supplies and protects against pilferage, loss, theft, or abuse.
E. Performs light repairs and maintenance on County facilities, as required.
F. Performs other duties as assigned.
3. Assists Maintenance Supervisor in the following:
A. Periodically inspects, or otherwise maintains awareness of, facility and equipment to detect and prevent injuries or damage.
B. Maintains control of assigned keys and entry devices.
C. Secures assigned vehicles and equipment to insure proper security at all times. Lock, secure and code out building at end of the day, where required
D. Verifies that emergency equipment is maintained and repaired as need be.
E. May assist with implementing emergency planning and response.
F. Performs other duties as assigned.
II. Minimum Qualifications:
A. Ability to communicate and maintain good working relations with all County employees, vendors, contractors, and the general public.
B. High school diploma or equivalent.
C. Two years’ experience in the field of building and lawn maintenance. Working knowledge of cleaning techniques (interior and exterior custodial), materials, and equipment. Strong knowledge of lawn maintenance and turf care, with the ability to operate lawn maintenance equipment and some heavy equipment (tractor, bush hogs, etc.)
D. Ability to work with frequent interruptions. Ability to meet tight time constraints and deadlines.
E. Ability to work using ladders, scaffolding, and County vehicles/equipment. Ability to spend most of the work-day standing, lifting, and walking. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and move heavier materials using appropriate equipment.
F. Ability to communicate in person, by radio, electronically and over the phone. Ability to complete reports, call in service requests, maintain inventories, etc.
G. Hold a valid South Carolina driver's license with a safe driving record.
H. May be trained in first aid certification/CPR and defibrillator training.
IV. Desired Qualifications
A. Ability to operate power equipment.
B. Experience with and strong working knowledge of lawn maintenance techniques, irrigation systems, landscaping and all associated experience with power equipment to perform those functions.
V. Physical and Environmental Requirements of the Position:

A. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, move about, communicate, hear and speak. Noise level may be high when operating power equipment.
B. Employee may be required to work in restricted spaces to include crawling and/or climbing as working at heights (ladders, scaffolding, and lifts). Required to stand, be on feet, and move around for a full work shift.
C. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
D. Employee is required to properly use and update knowledge of safety equipment as is appropriate to the work to prevent injury to self or others.
E. While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions. The employee is exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles.
F. Occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals. It may be expected that the individual could be exposed to blood or other potentially infectious materials or illnesses during the course of their duties.
G. Demonstrate the ability to push 100 pounds (power equipment, appliances, equipment, etc.); lift a minimum of 50 lbs. (supplies, materials, equipment and other items) in order to complete assigned tasks.
