Youth Services Officer - Cook - Shift

Examination Schedule:
  • Written Exam: will be conducted on January 29, 2026

Examinations: 
Written Exam (Weight 100%): Will be conducted for the purpose of assessing the applicant's knowledge of the methods of preparing food in large quantities and varieties; the behavior of youth incarcerated in a facility.

Applicants must attain at least a 70% score on each phase of the examination process.

Shift Pay: 5% additional pay for evening shift work; 7.5% additional pay for night shift work. Applicants must be able and willing to work any shift of a 24-hour period and any 5 of 7 days.  Applicants must be willing to work in any outlying county area, as assigned. 

Minimum Qualifications/ Employment Standards:

One year of experience in cooking and preparing food in large quantity in an institutional, hospital, full service restaurant or similar setting requiring the use of bulk, stock ingredients.

OR 

Successful completion of an accredited culinary arts program.

OR 

Any equivalent combination of training or experience.

Possession of a valid California Class C Driver’s License is required at the time of appointment.

Applicants must be citizens of the United States or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship. Applicants must have a reputation of honesty and trustworthiness. A felony conviction will be disqualifying and convictions for misdemeanors and traffic offenses will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. Appointees will be fingerprinted and will be required to pass an extensive background investigation.

Admittance to the examination will require a valid government issued photograph identification. Applicants who are unable to present proper identification must make arrangements with the Human Resources Division prior to the test date.

A background check may be conducted for this classification.
 
Following an offer of employment, you may be required to submit to post offer medical and drug screening tests at County expense.

Appointees are subject to fingerprinting for the purpose of a criminal records check as authorized by section 16501 of the California Welfare and Institutions code and section 11105.3 of the California Penal Code.
 
Bilingual (English/Spanish) applicants are encouraged to apply. Applicants must submit a bilingual (English/Spanish) certificate before the final filing deadline. Applicants who wish to be considered for bilingual employment must submit a bilingual certificate issued by the Kern County Human Resources Division or its authorized agent, Bakersfield College.

This examination will establish an eligible list from which an immediate appointment will be made with the Kern County Probation Department. Other permanent and temporary appointments will be made as needed. Successful candidates will remain on the eligible list for a period of twelve-months, unless specified otherwise by the Civil Service Commission. 

Candidates are encouraged to indicate acceptable geographical locations in which they would accept employment on their application form. Candidates MUST be willing to travel to these locations (areas/district offices).
