Examination Schedule:
- Written Exam: Qualified candidates will be notified of the testing date five (5) days prior to the examination.
Examination:
Written Exam (Weight 100%): Will be conducted for the purpose of assessing the applicant's knowledge of medical terminology including anatomy and physiology; the use of specified computer applications involving word processing, data entry and/or standard report generation; office administrative practices and procedures; record keeping principles; accurate and professional business English, including spelling, grammar and punctuation.
The Human Resources Division may solely conduct an appraisal of application materials should there be an insufficient number of candidates to warrant a written examination.
Applicants must attain at least a 70% score on each phase of the examination process.
Minimum Qualifications / Employment Standards:
- High School Diploma, G.E.D. or equivalent.
- Completion of a course in medical terminology AND two (2) years of experience transcribing or scribing in a medical setting.
- Certification of Typing/Keyboarding speed of 45 net words per minute.
- Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Driver's License upon appointment.
Applicants must submit a copy of their typing or keyboard certificate, issued within the last two years, verifying a speed of 45 net words per minute and attach it with their completed application. Certificates must conform to testing standards adopted by the Civil Service Commission. Typing certificates information may be found here.

This examination will establish an eligible list from which an immediate appointment will be made at the Kern County Sheriff's Office. Other permanent and temporary appointments will be made as needed.
