What are the responsibilities and job description for the Highway Painter / Senior Highway Painter position at Kern County?
Examination Schedule:
- Written Exam: Qualified candidates will be notified five days prior to the examination.
Examinations:
Written Exam (Weighted 100%): Will be conducted for the purpose of assessing the applicant's knowledge of paint and paint equipment, standard designs and uses of street markings and traffic signs, operation and maintenance of street marking machines and equipment, safety practices applicable to traffic marking work and computer applications related to the work.
The Human Resources Division may conduct an appraisal of application materials, should there be an insufficient number of candidates to merit a written examination. Should an appraisal be conducted, the appraisal will be weighted 100%.
Applicants must attain at least a 70% score on each phase of the exam process.
Minimum Qualifications/Employment Standards
Highway Painter:
Any combination of training and experience equivalent to a high school diploma, G.E.D. or equivalent AND four (4) years of paid experience as a residential or commercial painter. Highway painting experience is desirable.
Additional Requirements:
Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle License.
Senior Highway Painter:
Any combination of training and experience equivalent to completion of high school diploma, G.E.D. or equivalent and five (5) years of paid experience as a residential or commercial painter OR one (1) year of paid equivalent experience as a Highway Painter in the Kern County Classification System.
Additional Requirements:
Possession of a valid Class A California Driver’s License is required.

Full Job Description: Highway Painter / Senior Highway Painter
This is a continuous recruitment and may close at any time without notice.
Admittance to the examination will require a valid government issued photograph identification. Applicants who are unable to present proper identification must make arrangements with the Human Resources Division prior to the test date.
A background check may be conducted for this classification.
Following an offer of employment, you may be required to submit to post offer medical and drug screening tests at County expense.
This examination will establish an eligible list from which an immediate appointment will be made at the Public Works Department.
Other permanent and temporary appointments will be made as needed. Successful candidates will remain on the eligible list for a period of twelve-months, unless specified otherwise by the Civil Service Commission.
