BASIC JOB DESCRIPTION:  Under the general direction and supervision of the Site Administrator, is responsible for performing all scheduled custodial/setup operations as well as general grounds maintenance.  Makes minor, non-technical repairs and adjustments to site equipment, fixtures and structures as needed and performs other duties directly related to this job description.  Adheres to applicable laws, rules and regulations of the state, county and school district governing board.  Shall be familiar with and comply with all collective bargaining contracts pertinent to this position.   MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Performs all custodial and setup operations as scheduled.
  • Promotes and functions in a team environment vital to organization success in support of the District grounds and custodian operations meeting the needs of assigned work place.
  • Dusts, sweeps, cleans, scrubs, waxes, polishes and mops floors in classrooms, restrooms, offices, and similar facilities; cleans and paints over graffiti.
  • Operates cleaning equipment such as vacuums and floor scrubbing and polishing machines.
  • Washes and scrubs walls, lavatory fixtures, windows, painted surfaces, and drinking fountains.
  • Services soap dispensers, towel boxes, and similar facilities.
  • Sweeps, blows and hoses concrete or blacktop, sidewalks, parkways, and playground areas.
  • Replaces incandescent light bulbs and fluorescent tubes; moves and adjusts chairs, desks, tables, furniture, and equipment.
  • Gathers and disposes of paper, rubbish, and debris; empties and washes wastepaper baskets, garbage cans, and other refuse containers; collects paper and other material for recycle pick-up.
  • Uses, stores and properly disposes of chemicals, solvents and fluids, some of which may be considered toxic and require special handling; reads, understands and follows related material data sheets.
  • Assists in set up, clean up, and maintenance of facilities and rooms for meetings and special events.
  • Provides on-site support as required for campus events.
  • Prepares grounds for planting; plants, replants, fertilizes, waters, trims and prunes shrubs, trees, flowers and lawns; rakes, hoes and removes weeds.
  • Seeds or sods and fertilizes, waters, mows and trims lawns.
  • Installs, maintains, services, and repairs sprinklers and sprinkler heads.
  • Loads and hauls top soil, fir bark, granite and sand as well as setting up and maintaining athletic and outdoor play equipment including leveling the bark in the playground areas.
  • Responds as directed to emergency custodial calls during scheduled working hours.
  • Locks or unlocks doors, gates; raises and/or lowers flag; sets or disarm alarms, opens and/or secures site regularly or for special events.
  • Reports needed repairs or any unsafe conditions to the Site/Shift Senior Custodian or M&O Site Team Leader.
  • Assists in maintaining playing fields and grounds; paints lines and sprays logos, lines and drags sports areas including track, football and baseball fields; prepares tennis courts as necessary.
  • Cleans and maintains drainage areas; cleans gutters, fence lines and bleacher areas.
  • Operates spray rigs and fertilization equipment; mixes and applies herbicides and pesticides to grounds, fields and planted areas for pest infestation and weed control.
  • Operates power mowers, flail mower, power sweeper, forklift, light trucks and sprayers as necessary.
  • Makes minor repairs on tools, equipment, fixtures and structures.
  • Maintains confidentiality concerning staff, students and their families.
  • Maintains an acceptable attendance record.
  • Maintains a clean, orderly work station.
  • Willingness to update skills and knowledge commensurate with the demands of this position.
  • Shall perform other job related duties as assigned on an equitable basis.
  KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
  • Ability to see and read, with or without vision aids; ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels; ability to communicate so others will clearly understand normal conversation.
  • Ability to learn, complete necessary training, and carry out all aspects of general grounds maintenance and custodial duties including the proper care and safe use of equipment.
  • Ability to accept training in emergency response activities as necessary for fire, earthquake, evacuation procedures and location of shut off valves.
  • Knowledge of methods and supplies used in planting, cultivating, and caring for lawns, trees, shrubs, hedges, and flowers.
  • Knowledge of common plant diseases and insect pests plus methods and materials used in controlling them.
  • Skill/ability to repair and clean sprinkler/irrigation systems.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and due caution in the performance of assigned duties.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties.
  • Skill in performing heavy manual labor and meeting the physical requirements necessary to perform assigned duties.
  • Ability to operate light vehicles.
  • Ability to work effectively and safely around students.
  • Ability to pass the District job related test.
  WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Manual dexterity and physical condition necessary to maintain a rigorous work schedule.  Moderate to heavy physical effort for extended periods of time.
  • Physical demands include lifting up to 52 pounds, standing and walking for extended periods, bending at the waist, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, twisting, turning, reaching, stretching, handling, grasping.
  • Light to moderate stress level.
  ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
  • Work environment – indoors and outdoors.
  • Temperature – normal climate, occasional adverse weather conditions.
  • Chemical exposure – occasional:  herbicides, pesticides, gasoline, oil, solvents.
  • Noise/vibrations – frequent:  mower, blower, edger.
  • Fumes/gases/odors – occasional:  gasoline, oil, solvents, herbicides, pesticides
  • Dust – frequent:  blower.
  • Work surfaces – grass, asphalt, concrete and rough terrain.
  CONTACTS
  • Daily contact with maintenance/grounds staff, with staff, students and administrators
  • Occasional contact with community members and outside agency personnel.

  • Dexterity and physical condition to maintain a rigorous work schedule and meet standards of physical and mental health.   REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
  • Shall have skills, or be prepared to accept on-the-job training, covering all aspects of general grounds maintenance and custodial duties. 
  CERTIFICATES/LICENSES
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid California driver’s license.
  PHYSICAL DEMANDS SUMMARY:  Grounds/Maintenance Custodian must be able to perform up to HEAVY Physical Demand Classifications as described by the Dictionary of Occupational Titles including lifting a gas can, butcher paper, trash can and carry a 50 lbs bucket while climbing a ladder.   ACTIVITIES:
