TITLE: Visiting Assistant Professor of Chemistry

DEPARTMENT: College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources

REPORTS TO: Chair, College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources 

CLASSIFICATION: Faculty- 9 Month Non-Continuous

EFFECTIVE DATE: TBD

STANDARD WORK HOURS: 40 hours per week

LOCATION: On-Site-Main Campus

EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Full-Time 40 hours per week

EMPLOYMENT CLASSIFICATION: Exempt


JOB SUMMARY: 

The Visiting Assistant Professor of Chemistry is responsible for providing high-quality instruction in undergraduate chemistry courses and supporting the instructional mission of the department. This is a temporary, full-time, non-tenure-track faculty appointment. The successful candidate will teach assigned lecture and laboratory courses, maintain regular office hours, advise students as assigned, participate in departmental activities, and contribute to student success while maintaining academic standards consistent with Kentucky State University's mission.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Teach undergraduate chemistry lecture and laboratory courses as assigned.
  • Develop and maintain current course syllabi, instructional materials, laboratory exercises, and assessments.
  • Prepare and deliver effective classroom and laboratory instruction utilizing appropriate instructional technologies.
  • Evaluate student performance and submit grades in accordance with university policies and established deadlines.
  • Maintain regularly scheduled office hours to provide academic assistance and mentoring to students.
  • Meet all scheduled classes and fulfill assigned instructional responsibilities.
  • Maintain a safe laboratory environment and ensure compliance with university safety procedures and applicable regulations.
  • Participate in curriculum development, program assessment, and departmental meetings.
  • Advise students on academic matters as assigned.
  • Participate in university service activities appropriate for a visiting faculty appointment.
  • Maintain accurate academic and student records.
  • Remain current within the discipline through professional development and scholarly or creative activities, as appropriate for the appointment.
  • Regular and reliable on-campus attendance is an essential function of this position to provide instruction, laboratory supervision, office hours, advising, and participation in departmental and university activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the position.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of general chemistry and the ability to teach undergraduate chemistry courses.
  • Knowledge of laboratory procedures, instrumentation, and chemical safety practices.
  • Ability to communicate complex scientific concepts effectively in both classroom and laboratory settings.
  • Ability to develop and implement effective instructional strategies for students with varying levels of preparation.
  • Ability to use instructional technology and learning management systems.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to maintain accurate academic records and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and external constituents.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing positively as a member of the department.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and other technology required to perform assigned duties.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to student success.

 

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

  • This position does not have supervisory responsibility.



OTHER DUTIES:

  • Other related duties as assigned.



QUALIFICATIONS:

Education

  • Doctorate (Ph.D.) in Chemistry or a closely related field from an accredited institution is required.

 

Experience

  • Demonstrated ability or potential for effective undergraduate teaching.
  • Experience teaching lecture and/or laboratory chemistry courses at the college level is preferred.
  • Experience utilizing instructional technology and learning management systems is preferred.
  • Experience supervising undergraduate laboratory activities is preferred.

 

 

Licensing and Certifications: NA



WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work is performed in classrooms, laboratories, and typical office environments.
  • Requires standing, walking, sitting, speaking, hearing, and use of a computer for extended periods.
  • Requires occasional lifting and moving of laboratory supplies and equipment consistent with normal instructional duties.
  • Requires compliance with laboratory safety procedures and appropriate use of personal protective equipment when working with chemicals and laboratory equipment.
