Lactation Consultant Position Summary
The Lactation Consultant is responsible for providing evidence-based, comprehensive breastfeeding education, counseling, and support services for mothers, babies, and families. This position is responsible for providing guidance and support to healthcare providers, new parents, and families in the promotion of breastfeeding, as well as the implementation of breastfeeding-friendly practices.
What would a day as a Lactation Consultant with KBC include?
- Assesses patients lactation needs by obtaining medical histories, examining patients, and gathering information about the baby and family setting.
- Provides individual and group lactation support services, including prenatal lactation education, postpartum office and home visits, and follow-up phone and email support.
- Provides breastfeeding education and counseling to healthcare providers, families, and the community.
- Analyzes and documents physical, psychological, and social factors in developing an individualized plan of care. Communicates the plan of care and all pertinent information to other members of the health care team to provide coordinated patient treatment. Keeps accurate medical records and updates care whenever conditions, needs, or goals of the patient change.
- Communicates activities and problems with manager.
Lactation Consultant Position Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in nursing, health education, or related field
- Certification with the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners or enrolled in a certification training program required.
- At least two years of clinical experience in lactation.
- Knowledge of current breastfeeding research and evidence-based practices.
- Excellent teaching, communication, and counseling skills.
- Excellent organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills.
- Able to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
- Proficient in the use of computers and related software applications.
- Affiliation with lactation organizations is highly desirable.
- Ability to train and mentor incoming/new IBCLC's and interns
What would the work schedule look like?
You will be working 3 or more full 7-8 hour days of your choice per week in our Lexington, KY location, and one home visit day per week in the county(ies) of your choice.
