BROAD STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
The General Aviation Instructor is responsible for providing high-quality instruction to high school students in classroom and laboratory settings that help students develop the technical skills, safety habits, industry knowledge, and employability skills required for post-secondary education and careers in aviation, aerospace technology, unmanned aerial systems (UAS), and airport ground operations. The Aviation program prepares students for industry certifications and employment pathways through hands-on technical training, real-world projects, and partnerships with business and industry.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Valid State of Michigan Secondary Teaching Certificate with a Vocational/Occupational Endorsement(s) or Authorization in Aeronautics/Aviation/Aerospace Science & Technology (CIP Code 49.0101)
OR
- Standard/Professional CTE Certificate or Provisional/Professional Certificate in Aviation, Aerospace, Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), Airport Operations, Aircraft Maintenance, or closely related technical field
OR
- Minimum of two years (4,000 hours) recent and relevant work experience in aviation, aerospace, drone/UAS operations, airport operations, aircraft maintenance, military aviation, or ground support operations to qualify for Annual Career Authorization
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certification preferred (or ability to obtain within one year)
- Pilot license, aviation maintenance certification, or other aviation industry credential preferred
- Experience with flight simulation software, UAS platforms, or aviation technical equipment preferred
- Ability to work with high school population including extracurricular activities and student organizations
- Ability to develop curriculum aligned to state-approved aviation standards
- Ability to develop partnerships and advisory committee relationships
- Previous experience with high school students preferred but not required
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides career and technical education (CTE) program instruction, program management, and curriculum development
- Develops high-quality lessons and laboratory activities using real-world aviation applications and industry resources
- Prepares students for industry certification and testing (e.g., FAA Part 107 and related credentials)
- Maintains a current advisory committee involving business and industry partners
- Provides leadership involvement with CTSO student organizations and competitions when applicable
- Develops professional and post-secondary partnerships
- Plans a program of study that meets individual student needs and abilities
- Creates a classroom and lab environment conducive to learning and safety
- Teaches and enforces aviation safety procedures and operational protocols
- Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media
- Assesses student progress and provides reports
- Maintains accurate program documentation required by law and district policy
- Coordinates work-based learning, job shadowing, and field experiences
- Maintains equipment inventory and lab safety procedures
- Communicates with parents and students regarding academic progress and career pathways.

Placement on the BA scale is required unless candidate holds a valid State of Michigan Standard CTE teaching certificate. (BA Step 1-5 = $54,386-$66,017/year).
- Placement on BA 18, MA, or MA lanes is considered after receipt of a valid State of Michigan Standard CTE teaching certificate, per Master Agreement.
