The Director of Tax Strategy & Planning is a senior leadership role based out of our Boston, MA office and responsible for overseeing all aspects of tax planning, strategy, compliance oversight, and risk management across a complex portfolio that includes real estate investments, family offices, multi-entity business structures, trusts, and high net-worth individuals. This role partners closely with executive leadership, finance, legal, professional trustees, and external advisors to ensure tax efficiency, regulatory compliance, and long-term strategic alignment.
The ideal candidate brings 10-15 years of progressive tax experience, deep technical expertise in real estate taxation, direct exposure to family offices and multi-entity businesses, and meaningful experience advising on trust, estate, private wealth, and wealth transfer tax matters.
Key Responsibilities
Tax Strategy & Planning:
- Lead enterprise-wide tax strategy with a focus on real estate entities, partnerships, alternative investments, funds, REITs, and family office structure
- Proactively identify tax planning opportunities related to acquisitions, dispositions, refinancing, restructurings, succession planning, and ownership transitions
- Advise on federal, state, and local tax implications of strategic initiatives and investments, gifting programs, trust funding, charitable planning, and family entity transactions
- Monitor legislative and regulatory changes and assess impact on the organization and related entities
Compliance & Governance:
- Oversee all tax compliance activities (federal, state, local), ensuring accuracy and timeliness through internal review and external providers
- Review and approve complex tax filings, including partnership returns, multi-state filings, fiduciary income tax returns, gift tax returns, and individual returns for principals where applicable
- Manage tax audits and inquiries; act as primary liaison with tax authorities
- Establish and maintain strong tax governance, documentation, and internal controls
Real Estate & Family Office Expertise
Provide subject matter expertise on the following:
- Partnership taxation
- Capital accounts, basis tracking, and allocation methodologies
- Cost segregation, depreciation strategies, and 1031 exchanges
- Pass through entities and multi-tier structures
- Support family office needs including income tax planning, estate and trust coordination, and cash-flow-driven tax strategies
Estate and Wealth Transfer Planning:
Work with legal counsel and family office advisors on tax planning for real estate, trust, and wealth transfer matters, including:
- Estate, gift, GST, trust, and fiduciary income tax planning. Wealth transfer and succession strategies to minimize transfer taxes and preserve long-term family ownership
- Planning involving dynasty trusts, grantor trusts, GRATs, SLATs, charitable vehicles, and family partnership
- Trust formations, recapitalizations, family entity restructurings, and estate or trust administration matters
- Coordination with legal counsel, trustees, private wealth advisors, CPA firms, valuation specialists, and family office professionals
Leadership & Collaboration:
- Serve as trusted advisor to senior leadership and family principals
- Manage and coordinate external advisors such as CPA firms, legal counsel, valuation specialists, and professional trustees
- Mentor and develop internal finance or tax staff as applicable
- Drive continuous improvement in tax processes, strategies, systems, and reporting
Qualifications & Experience:
- BA in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- CPA required; MST, JD, or LLM in Taxation strongly preferred
- 10-15 years of progressive tax experience
- Significant experience with real estate taxation, partnership taxation, private investment structures, estate and gift tax issues, fiduciary income, and private wealth taxation
- Demonstrated exposure to family offices, private wealth, closely held investment structures
- Experience coordinating tax planning with estate planning, trust administration, charitable planning, and wealth transfer strategies
- Familiarity with multigenerational wealth planning structures, family governance considerations, and succession planning initiatives
- In depth knowledge of federal and state tax law and regulatory requirements
- Proven ability to operate at a strategic and executive-facing level
- Strong communication skills with ability to translate technical concepts into business impact
- Ability to manage deadlines, work on multiple assignments, and prioritize effectively
- Experience supporting high-net-worth individuals and complex ownership structures
- Background in public accounting combined with private-sector or family office experience preferred

We offer competitive and generous compensation. The target compensation for this role is a base salary of up to $200k plus a performance based annual bonus. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors, including prior experience and expertise and may vary from the amount above. This range does not represent additional compensation benefits such as 401k, or medical, dental, or vision insurance.
