JOB SUMMARY:
We are seeking a Tutor with experience teaching adults, particularly in math and English Language Arts (ELA), to help prepare our participants for the ATAS exam. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in tutoring adults, with the ability to adapt lessons and provide individualized support to adult learners.
Grow Your Own at the Kennedy Children's Center is a six-week training program that recruits adults and trains them to become certified early childhood special education teacher assistants, at no cost to them. The standardized, multiple-choice ATAS exam includes math and reading at the ninth grade level.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Provide one-on-one and group tutoring for up to 15 adult learners at a time, focusing on math and ELA content relevant to the ATAS exam.
- Provide tutoring both in person at both of KCC's school sites (1028 E 179th St Bronx, NY and 2212 3rd Ave NY, NY) and online using KCC's Zoom account (must have working computer, webcam, and microphone)
- Develop and implement effective lesson plans that meet the diverse needs of adult learners, helping them build skills in math and ELA.
- Assist our adult learners with test preparation.
- Offer individual support to adult learners struggling with specific content areas, using personalized scaffolding strategies to address their unique learning needs.
- Track progress and provide feedback to help adult learners stay on track for success on the ATAS exam.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience tutoring adults is strongly preferred, particularly in math and English Language Arts (ELA).
- Strong academic background in math and ELA, with the ability to explain concepts clearly and adapt to different learning styles.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage and support adult learners in a positive and patient manner.
- Comfortable working with diverse populations, including those from low-income communities, with an understanding of the unique challenges adult learners face.
- Proficiency in using online tools, including Zoom, and the ability to conduct virtual tutoring sessions effectively. Must have a working computer, webcam, and microphone.
- Ability to develop customized instructional materials to meet the needs of adult learners preparing for the ATAS exam.
