Join our vibrant community as a YMCA Afterschool Aid / Child Watch Attendant working between both our afterschool programs in Augusta and Winthrop, where your energy and dedication will make a meaningful difference in the lives of children. In this role, you will create a safe, engaging, and nurturing environment for children during afterschool hours and child watch during earlier parts of the day (Augusta only). Your enthusiasm and proactive approach will help foster positive experiences that support childhood development, social skills, and fun-filled learning. This paid position offers an exciting opportunity to work with children of diverse backgrounds while developing valuable skills in childcare, education, and behavior management.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and engage children in age-appropriate activities that promote social interaction, creativity, and physical activity
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of all children by adhering to safety protocols and maintaining vigilant supervision
  • Facilitate structured activities such as arts and crafts, sports, games, or storytime to encourage learning and fun
  • Support children with their individual needs, including those requiring special education or behavioral management strategies
  • Communicate effectively with parents, staff, and children to foster a positive environment
  • Assist with classroom management and behavior guidance to promote respectful interactions and cooperation
  • Maintain cleanliness of activity areas and ensure all equipment is used safely and appropriately

Requirements

  • Prior experience working with children in settings such as daycare, camp, tutoring, or babysitting is preferred
  • Knowledge of childhood development principles and behavior management techniques
  • Certification in first aid and CPR (or willingness to obtain upon hire) to ensure child safety at all times
  • Strong classroom management skills with the ability to handle multiple children confidently
  • Ability to work effectively with children requiring special education or additional support services
  • Excellent communication skills to collaborate with team members and engage positively with children and parents
  • Flexibility to work afternoons, evenings, or weekends as needed for program schedules
