Lumber Grader- Hands on Training

General Description:

The Lumber Grader shall work to ensure actions reflect the company culture, work meets or exceeds company standards, values and working environment and actions reflect that as outlined by the Department Manager and will support the development and execution of the safety mission at Kennebec Lumber Company. This position ensures proper grading and inspection of all boards in compliance with NeLMA standards and KLC guidelines.

Responsibilities:

• Understand all NeLMA grading rules per the handbook for each species of wood that is processed at KLC.
• Ensure that you grade each board appropriately before it is sorted.
• Place the appropriate width mark on boards as it passes the grading station, using a ruler for accuracy.
• Inspect lumber as part of the grading process for planer defects, coloring, kiln defects and other grading discrepancies.
• Ensure that the stacking line is properly sorting the boards per the grading mark.
• Follow all change over and end of day procedures.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements

• Bend, stretch & twist multiple times daily.
• Moderate to Heavy wrist / hand repetitions.
• Stand for long periods of time.
• Ability to work swiftly and accurately.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
• No allergies to sawdust, particles in the air (respiratory concerns).
• Ability to work in all weather conditions (below 0 degrees temps to over 90-degree temps).

Other Requirements

• Pick up after yourself and during downtimes.
• Participate in the department housekeeping program.
• Work area must be kept clean at all times.
• Excellent hand / eye coordination.

• Read and write proficiently.

• Excellent interpersonal and communications skills.
• Must be in working station at the buzzer.
• Additional training as required.
