What are the responsibilities and job description for the Summer Day Camp Counselor position at Kenan Center?
Summer Camp Counselor
Reports to: Summer Camp Directors
Position Overview
Join the team for Daisy’s Summer Day Camp, a vibrant "whole-child" camp experience! As a Camp Counselor, you will guide campers (entering 1st–7th grade) through a mix of Arts, Culture, Recreation, Education, and Sports. We are looking for caring staff who can weave Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) into daily activities to help kids build resilience, empathy, and leadership skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Activity Leadership: Lead daily activities across the Kenan Center campus, following a pre-set schedule.
- SEL Integration: Use camp moments to teach teamwork, communication, and confidence-building through counselor-driven opportunities to build peer bonds and make decisions as a group.
- Safety & Supervision: Ensure a safe, healthy, and joy-filled environment for all campers by following camp rules and Department of Health guidelines.
- Facility Care: Assist in the daily upkeep and organization of the fields and recreational spaces to ensure they are clean and safe.
- Collaboration: Work with the summer camp staff to deliver age-appropriate programming that meets kids where they are.
Schedule & Availability
- Work Days: Monday through Friday.
- Shift Hours: Standard camp hours involve drop-off starting at 8:00 AM and pick-up ending at 5:30 PM. Camp days will be split into morning and afternoon shifts.
- Camp Calendar: Camp runs for 9 weeks beginning on Monday, June 29 and ending on Friday, August 28. We understand that some applicants will go back to college before camp ends. Please know your move-in date to the best of your ability so that we can be ready to work around it.
Qualifications
- Character-Driven: Passionate about working with youth and making a difference in their lives. Strong organizational skills and a thoughtful, team-first attitude.
- Motivated and Energetic: Must be comfortable performing physical activities and working with kids. Counsellors are expected to participate and engage; not just supervise.
- Must be 18 years of age: Due to DOH regulations, we unfortunately will only be hiring 18 and older for summer camp. We encourage those younger than 18 to apply for the coach-mentor position!
- Red Cross CPR/First Aid Certified: Must be dated within the past year due to DOH regulations. We will provide an opportunity to get certified if needed.
Pay: $16.00 - $18.00 per hour
