Job Summary
As a Special Education Specialist, you will play a vital role in providing an individualized educational program for students with developmental disabilities. Your primary function is to design and implement functional educational programs based on student assessments.
Responsibilities:
1. Collaborate with the Child Study / I.E.P. Team to assess pupils, develop individualized instructional plans, and monitor progress.
2. Instruct assigned pupils using specialized techniques, equipment, and materials as specified in the instructional plan.
3. Prepare adaptive materials and devices used in working with pupils.
4. Foster motivation in pupils with short attention spans and difficulties with independent work.
5. Teach functional skills that may not be typically taught in regular classrooms, including community involvement.
6. Develop sensory abilities through tactile, auditory, visual, olfactory, and taste stimulations to help pupils understand and interact with their environment.
7. Promote self-awareness, interpersonal skills, and concern for others through various activities.
8. Encourage gross and fine motor development, spatial awareness, and self-help in areas of grooming and hygiene.
Requirements and Qualifications: The ideal candidate will possess a credential or credentials suitable for performing assigned tasks, effective communication and collaboration skills, and the ability to work with children, school personnel, and community agencies. Directly responsible to the Elementary School Principal and Director of Special Education.
