A Sanitation Custodial Manager oversees and directs cleaning and maintenance operations to ensure facilities meet health, safety, and hygiene standards. This managerial position requires a combination of leadership skills, technical knowledge of cleaning protocols, and administrative abilities.
Key duties and responsibilities
Operational management
Plan, schedule, and direct daily sanitation and custodial tasks for all buildings and facilities.
Establish and enforce cleaning procedures and standards for cleanliness and sanitation.
Ensure that operations comply with federal, state, and local safety and sanitation regulations, such as those set by OSHA or the USDA.
Conduct regular quality assurance inspections and audits of all assigned areas.
Troubleshoot cleaning challenges and implement effective remedies.
Staff supervision and development
Hire, train, and manage custodial staff, including performance evaluations, scheduling, and disciplinary actions.
Lead and motivate the team to achieve high standards of performance and safety.
Provide ongoing training on proper cleaning techniques, chemical handling, and equipment use.
Foster a safe work environment and ensure staff wear proper personal protective equipment (PPE).
Administrative functions
Develop and manage the departmental budget, controlling costs related to labor, supplies, and equipment.
Maintain and monitor the inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment, and manage relationships with external vendors.
Keep detailed records of cleaning schedules, work orders, and maintenance activities.
Utilize computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) or other software to manage operations efficiently.
Interdepartmental coordination
Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders, such as facility users and building management, to address needs and concerns.
Coordinate with other departments on special projects or to ensure seamless operations.
Provide timely reports to senior management on progress, issues, and budget performance.
Required qualifications
Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is typically required, though additional education in a related field is often preferred.
Experience: Most positions require several years of custodial or janitorial experience, including a minimum of 2-5 years in a supervisory or management role.
Skills:
o Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
o Expertise in commercial cleaning equipment and chemical usage.
o Proficiency with budget management and inventory control.
o Thorough knowledge of regulatory requirements, such as OSHA.
o Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
