Summary
The Controller oversees all financial operations, payroll, internal controls, and compliance for the company and its affiliated entities. This role ensures accurate financial reporting, supports project teams, manages the accounting staff, and drives process improvements across the organization.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & Analysis
• Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
• Ensure all financial reporting deadlines are met and statements are reviewed with ownership.
• Lead trend and variance analysis; support budgeting and forecasting processes.
• Maintain and improve financial reporting systems for accuracy and efficiency.
• Coordinate annual external audits and assist with special financial projects.
• Identify and implement financial and operational process improvements.
Financial Close & Internal Controls
• Oversee month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close for multiple entities.
• Review and approve journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial adjustments.
• Ensure accurate recording of financial transactions and compliance with internal controls.
• Identify and mitigate financial risks through improved systems and oversight.
Accounts Payable & Accounts Receivable
• Oversee AP/AR operations, ensuring timely and accurate processing of invoices, payments, and collections.
• Maintain effective AP/AR policies and procedures.
• Monitor aging reports and resolve vendor or customer issues as needed.
Payroll Management & Labor Compliance
• Oversee end-to-end payroll processing for field and office employees.
• Verify hours, overtime, shift differentials, per diem, bonuses, and job-specific pay requirements.
• Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including FLSA, certified payroll, Davis-Bacon, and prevailing wage.
• Review payroll reports, manage corrections, maintain payroll records, and oversee payroll tax filings.
• Lead improvements in payroll systems, workflows, automation, and internal controls.
Project Accounting & Operational Support
• Ensure accurate and timely project cost tracking, job costing, WIP schedules, and revenue recognition.
• Support project managers with budgeting, forecasting, cost control, and margin analysis.
• Support contract compliance, lien releases, COI management, and PO accuracy.
• Ensure compliance with contractual and regulatory financial requirements.
Cash Flow, Banking & Treasury
• Manage banking relationships and oversee daily cash management.
• Monitor cash flow and ensure adequate liquidity for operations.
• Prepare cash flow forecasts to support strategic decision-making.
Taxes
• Oversee preparation and filing of federal, state, and local tax returns.
• Ensure compliance with sales and use tax regulations.
• Coordinate with external tax advisors to optimize tax strategies.
Insurance & Risk Management
• Assist with management of insurance policies including general liability, property, and workers’ compensation.
• Coordinate with brokers and carriers to ensure adequate coverage and competitive rates.
Legal Entity Compliance
• Maintain legal entities with CT Corp and ensure timely completion of annual filings.
• Manage documentation and reporting for all legal entities and statutory requirements.
Systems & Process Improvement
• Manage accounting, payroll, and ERP systems (CMiC, Viewpoint, Sage, Procore integrations).
• Ensure data integrity, security, and documentation standards.
• Identify inefficiencies and lead continuous improvement initiatives.
Leadership & Team Management
• Oversee Accounting, AP, AR, Payroll, and Job Cost staff.
• Provide leadership, mentorship, and performance management for the accounting team.
• Foster a collaborative and high-performance culture across the finance organization.
Required Skills & Qualifications
• Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA/CMA preferred but not required.
• Experience:
- 10–15 years of accounting/finance experience, including 3 years in a leadership role.
- 3 years as a Controller in the industrial construction industry.
• Technical Skills:
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and ERP/accounting systems.
- Advanced proficiency in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
• Professional Skills:
- Strong analytical and strategic thinking.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and negotiation skills.
- Proven ability to lead, mentor, and develop accounting teams.
